Event Description
Library Learning Experiences in K-12 and Postsecondary Education - April MiALA Member Meet Up
Event Date/Time: Thursday, April 14th, 10:00am-11:00am
Host: Mi-ALA Instruction and IL IG

Since 2000, the number of certified K-12 school librarians in Michigan schools have plummeted. At the same time, the need for learners of all ages to be thoughtful consumers of diverse information sources has perhaps never been more critical. How do we, as academic librarians who provide instruction, reference, research help, or other public services, understand our incoming students’ experiences? Moreover, how can we develop a more nuanced and meaningful understanding of the challenges and opportunities for information literacy instruction in K-12 education?

Join the MiALA Instruction and Information Literacy Interest Group as we host three Information Literacy Specialists from Rochester Community Schools to discuss these ideas. In particular, we’ll focus on the connections, challenges, and opportunities that exist between K-12 and postsecondary education.

This casual conversation will be a sharing session where academic librarians and K-12 information literacy specialists can talk together to address:

-The kinds of library instruction and instructional technology tools that K-12 students are exposed to
today and what we in academic libraries might expect from incoming first-year students
-The ways in which COVID has impacted K-12 students’ learning experiences and expectations, especially
around information literacy
-Any consistent challenges we experience in both K-12 and academic settings around information literacy,
or teaching and learning more generally
-Emerging issues for students in K-12 educational settings, especially around information literacy
instruction and critical thinking
-Opportunities that exist for school libraries / librarians and academic libraries to partner / collaborate, or
to advocate for each other
