March 15: Touch
How do we refine our touch to evoke different movement experiences in our clients? We will explore adapting our touch to match the intention behind our interventions, such as touch that: evokes awareness, awakens proprioception, invites yield, releases weight, activates curiosity, creates dimensionality, listens, differentiates, invites spatial awareness, supports continuity, or guides instead of directs. A seemingly simple exercise such as coaching the transition from sitting to standing becomes more powerful when our touch evokes shifts in tonus, sequence, and movement quality. We will practice incorporating educational touch and movement exercises with facial mobilization.

April 12: Gravity
Through embodiment and tangible application of theory, we will explore the dynamic interaction between gravity and motor control as a primary means of integration. The cooperative interaction between one’s center of gravity, upper center of gravity, base of support, spatial orientation, premovement, weight shift and momentum will be covered and grounded in practice. Refining our capacity to directly address movement patterns relational to gravity often provides the key to facilitating lasting changes in long-standing structural patterns. We will work with simple props and explore interventions that can be readily incorporated into our Rolfing and Rolf Movement sessions.

May 3: Stability/Mobility
We will explore the synergistic relationship between the capacity to stabilize for mobility and mobilize for stability. This kinetic dialogue occurs locally and globally and is foundational to efficiency, ease, and grace. Also, restoration of stability/mobility coordination is critical for full injury recovery. Topics covered will increase practitioners’ ability to address Joint Hypermobility Syndrome and balance concerns. Guidelines for creating movement exercises for individual home programs will be covered.

Rebecca Carli-Mills became interested in somatic movement studies while pursuing BA and MFA degrees in Dance. She earned Rolf Movement certification in 1987 with Janie French and Annie Duggan. Rebecca certified as a Rolfer in 1989, and an Advanced Rolfer in 1992. In 1994, Rebecca graduated from the Pennsylvania Gestalt Psychotherapy Center and joined the Rolf Movement faculty. Rebecca’s understanding of gravity and human movement potential is enriched by her long time studies with movement expert Hubert Godard. Additionally, she draws upon her studies in Laban/Bartenieff, Sensory Awareness, Gyrotonics & yoga. Rebecca has an active practice in Chevy Chase MD.
