This professional, appointed position is responsible for progressing the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Crime Analysis Unit through implementation of GIS-related projects, to include internal Basemaps, Interactive Maps and Public-facing web maps. The position is required to effectively communicate to all levels of staff the needs of Geographic Information Systems (GIS); recommending solutions to allow the agency to effectively utilize the best GIS options available.

This position is one of professional research, developmental and analytical work at the managerial level in the collection, analysis, and presentation of criminal, offender, and juvenile data. The work requires knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques used in research and analysis of criminal data which is usually gained through formal education and work experience.

Schedules, assigns, monitors, reviews and evaluates the work of GIS staff and analysts.
Coordinates GIS-related resources, work tasks/assignments and budget.
Keeps the CAU Administrator and agency command, staff abreast of GIS-related software and technologies.
Designs and prepares internal GIS training to CAU staff.
Contacts require skills in understanding and influencing others which are important in supervising a staff, collecting data and presenting results of analysis to others. Operates personal computers, plotters, and printers, utilizing relational databases, graphics, GIS, text and statistical analytical software packages, spreadsheets, word processing and related applications.

The physical demands consist mainly of sitting at work stations using microcomputer equipment or reviewing the work of others for extended periods of time. The work is performed under limited supervision where the work assignments are subject to established procedures, practices, precedents, methods, techniques and well-defined policies; the worker works closely with analysts, training, coaching, and mentoring them based on the overall vision and leadership for the unit. They also plan and help them organize and prioritize the work; and the work is reviewed, usually after the fact, in terms of quality, accuracy, volume, timeliness, and adherence to established methods, standards and policies.

This position reports to the Crime Analysis Unit Administrator.

Qualifications:
A six year combination of education, training and experience in research, data analysis, and statistical work which includes production of technical reports, spreadsheets, graphs, charts, maps, and tables using personal computers.
Documented knowledge of the GIS and crime analysis profession regionally, nationally and internationally.
At least 2 years of supervisory experience is required.
A Bachelor’s Degree with a major in criminal justice, geography, information systems, statistics, or related field with appropriate experience is required.
Must have successfully completed 18 semester hours of college-level coursework of which must include criminal justice, geography, information systems, statistics or other job related coursework.
A Master’s Degree with a major in criminal justice, geography, information systems, statistics, or related field with appropriate experience is preferred.
