Analysis work of more than ordinary difficulty and responsibility in the identification of patterns, trends, common characteristics, and underlying causes of criminal activity.

An employee in this class is responsible for analysis of Police Department crime data. Work involves responsibility for developing effective methods for use in selection, assembly, and organization of significant data to permit analysis, reporting of conclusions, and recommending appropriate solutions. Work requires considerable independent judgment and initiative. Supervision is received from a Lieutenant and work is reviewed through conferences, review and analysis of reports, and recommendations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Inputs criminal intelligence and investigative data into a computer-stored data base. Organizes and analyzes data on robberies, burglaries, sex crimes, and other crimes which may follow a pattern. Researches, analyzes, and interprets offense data and offender profiles; identifies crime problem areas and changes in crime patterns; and compiles statistical data and prepares special reports. Develops methods for correlation of crime data and determination of patterns, trends, or common characteristics relating to crime within the City. Develops and maintains significant characteristic abstracts of past and current crime patterns and trends. Maintains files on criminals' modus operandi, field interrogation reports, suspect files, and prison releases. Maintains support and other files. Performs regular and specific research analysis of crime, social, and economic data. Prepares and submits daily reports; reports showing suggested development based upon crime trends; and special reports, including charts, graphs, and logs as requested. Provides target identification, lists of possible suspects, and analytical and investigative support to strategic intelligence squads. Develops staff-work conclusions and recommendations for improvement or correction of specific or related crime problems. Provides staff with information concerning current and past investigations. Adjusts files and recommendations based on feedback, such as arrests and information from police officers. Performs related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Criminology, Sociology, Political Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Public Administration, or related field. One (1) year of experience in research, statistics, or analysis, preferably in the area of crime analysis. Strong computer skills are required. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
