The Eagle River Water and Sanitation District provides high quality, affordable drinking water to its customers to protect public health and the natural surroundings. A big part of delivering clean water to our customers is maintaining our raw water and water storage. We are looking for a professional and dedicated Water Operator to help with maintenance of our reservoirs and tanks, as well as learn and assist in plant operations.
With the raw water maintenance aspect of the role, you will be asked to hike out to tanks and reservoirs at any time of year on foot, snowshoes, skis, and even snow machines as maintenance and weather require. So a day in the life of this role could mean a full day of physical activity outside in the Rockies- not a bad office view!
The ideal candidate for this role has mechanical ability, a heart for community service, and doesn’t mind some pretty physical work. We are looking someone who is self-motivated, independent, and willing to take on significant responsibility to serve our community and environment.

The Day to Day:
• RAW WATER AND WATER STORAGE MAINTENANCE: Demonstrates the location and knowledge of water storage tanks, booster pump stations (BPS’s), groundwater wells, and surface water treatment plants (SWTP’s) including abnormalities to assure proper fill rates. Assists in the sanitary maintenance of tanks and water storage assets to maintain water quality and regulatory compliance standards. Will assist in tank inspections and coordinate preventative maintenance for water storage assets including outsourcing of services. Responsible for calculating rates, monitoring, and performing raw water release. Works with Water Supervisors to manage and maintain reservoirs.
• TREATMENT PROCESS: Responsible for adequate treatment and delivery of ground and surface water to our customers and community. Performs basic water plant operations. Assists with and performs general maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment. Engages in advanced water treatment plant and distribution system operations via SCADA, including starting and stopping pumps, opening and closing valves, ensuring adequate water quality and quantity in the distribution system, and adjusting storage tanks set points as needed. Monitors equipment and treatment processes.
• WATER QUALITY: Responsible for water quality and flow through Surface Water Treatment Facilities and adjusts flow rates to keep up with demand. Monitors turbidity, chlorine residual, and fluoride levels to meet state and federal standards and adjust plant operations accordingly. Maintains QA/QC records on online monitoring equipment. Collects regulatory water quality samples in the field as assigned, including Bacteriological samples and disinfection byproduct sampling, and additional water quality data as needed. Demonstrates understanding of Water Quality Analyzers.
• CHEMISTRY: Regulates, adjusts and calculates chemical feed rates. Performs lab work and calibrates lab equipment.
• CUSTOMER SERVICE: Responds to customer water complaints as needed.
• MAINTENANCE: Performs general maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment.
• Calculates tank volumes and pumping rates to assure proper fill rates. Must possess a strong mechanical understanding of equipment and processes.
• DOCUMENTATION: Routine documentation and monitoring of facilities, including treatment and distribution assets. Assists in monthly reports and other required paperwork, including preparing work orders. Compiles and organizes historical data for facility logs.
• REGULATORY COMPLIANCE: Demonstrates basic knowledge state (CDPHE) and federal (EPA) drinking water standards.
• TEAMWORK: Assists in coordinating activities of water operations staff. Works collaboratively with all departments and district staff. Demonstrates a willingness to work independently in a team environment. Respectfully communicates with peers and the public. Embraces district mission, vision, and values. Demonstrates a strong work ethic, integrity, positive attitude and is a team player. Demonstrate tact and professionalism in communication. Completes administrative functions correctly and on time including purchasing card reconciliation, time entry, scheduling, and reading emails. Maintains the ability to work shift work, holidays, and on-call duties as needed; on call and shift work is split evenly by all team members.
• SAFETY: Follows district Safety standards. Follows all District safety and security policies and wear Personal Protective Equipment as required by the job duties.


Qualifications:
Qualifications
• Must be willing to work overtime, holidays, and weekends. Must be willing to work On Call shifts.
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in water related field or water and or environmental sciences.
• A four year science degree and mechanical troubleshooting skills are highly desired.
• Colorado Water Operator certifications preferred.
• Must be able to demonstrate tact and professionalism in communication.
• Must have strong written communication skills, including the ability to provide documentation for daily logs and reports to ensure accurate record keeping and continuity in day to day operations.
• Computer proficiency required, including basic Microsoft Office skills including Word, Outlook and Excel.
• Must have aptitude and ability to work with CMMS to create work orders and use GIS to read maps.
• Ability to use office equipment such as phone systems, copier, and fax machine, and radio system required.
• Must be able to work independently in a team environment.
• Must be comfortable with or have aptitude to learn the operations and general maintenance of snow machines Basic math skills including the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Must be able to hike, snowshoe, or Nordic ski in variable & sometimes extreme conditions
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written and oral instructions.
• Proven customer service skills.
• The employee will be required to obtain MSHA (Mine Safety & Health Administration) certification
• Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's license within 30 days of full time employment and be insurable under District's standards.
• Must obtain CPR/First Aid Certification within the first six (6) months of employment.
• Must be able to obtain Water Treatment Operator Class D and Water Distribution Operator Class 1 licensure within 18 months of date of employment in accordance with the Colorado Certified Water Professional (CWWP) program requirements.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. However, the noise level in the plant environment is usually loud.
The employee is occasionally required to enter confined spaces to include vaults, pits, underground & above ground storage tanks. The employee occasionally has to work on mine property and will be required to obtain MSHA (Mine Safety & Health Administration) certification


Comments:
Compensation depends on experience and certifications. Trainee level operators (no certifications) usually start at a minimum $18.75/hr. Relevant skills and education will be considered in compensation decisions.
