DEFINITION

Plan, schedule and perform a variety of skilled, semi-skilled and highly technical tasks in the maintenance, repair and service of water and wastewater treatment plant equipment, machinery and related facilities. This position must work well in group setting/peers and with the public, while providing excellent, respectful customer service and human relations skills, which support the City of Brighton's mission and values.

SUPERVISION GIVEN AND RECEIVED

Reports to the Senior Plant Mechanic. The Plant Mechanic leads the work of 1-2 maintenance personnel.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintains, repairs and services machinery and equipment including pumps, valves, motors, engines, meters, drives, tanks and compressors.

Establishes schedules and prioritizes maintenance and repair work.

Develops and implements activities with other City Departments.

Performs preventive maintenance checks and servicing on equipment.

Coordinates activities with other City departments.

Welds and fabricates valves, piping systems, and other fixtures related to wastewater treatment equipment.

Reads charts, gauges and meters to determine status of the wastewater treatment plant.

Operates and maintains a variety of equipment and tools in the performance of assigned maintenance tasks including welding and fabrication of equipment, dump trucks, jack hammers, drills, pumps and air compressors.

Establishes and maintains equipment maintenance and repair records.

Packs and lubricates bearings; cleans and paints pumping equipment and motors.

Trains other employees. Inspects and recommends the approval of work performed by outside contractors.

Purchases and requisitions supplies, materials, parts and equipment.

Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.



Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Methods, practices, materials and tools used in the repair of equipment and machinery including pumps, valves and motors.

Principles and practices of water and wastewater treatment and operations.

Preventative maintenance techniques related to water and wastewater treatment facilities, equipment and machinery.

Safe work practices.

Ability to:

Plan and carry out an effective equipment maintenance and repair program.

Develop preventive maintenance techniques and schedules.

Perform difficult and complex maintenance and repair tasks involving pumps, valves and motors.

Diagnose plant equipment malfunctions and determine proper corrective action.

Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Train and lead other employee(s) as assigned.

Accurately read and record data from gauges and meters.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and operations staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent. Two (2) years of experience as a plant mechanic in a wastewater or water treatment plant.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to perform moderately heavy manual labor.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid driver's license with good driving record.

Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Ability to complete FEMA IS 100 and IS 700 training within six (6) months of hire.
