The City of Cortez has an opening for a Water Treatment Plant Operator position in the Public Works Department. Some of the responsibilities of the position are as follows:

Services pumps, motors, controls, and meters. Back washes and cleans filters; operates the settling tank; maintains the head gate.
Repairs equipment that breaks down, including ordering parts and installing them. When breakdowns require special skills from electricians and factory representatives, operators oversee the work being done for the City of Cortez.
Conducts water samples at various locations of distribution system. Determines the condition of raw and treated water and must know the necessary chemical dosage for proper water chemistry. Collects and mails water samples to the Colorado State Health Department.
Performs minor housekeeping tasks such as maintaining grounds and plant facility (such as weed control around reservoirs); treats reservoirs with copper sulfate for algae control.
Monitors reservoir control (water depth).
Orders supplies, chemicals and replacement parts; monitors inventory; continually updates knowledge of water treatment.
Assists Superintendent in monitoring and preparing budget information for plant.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Weekend and holiday duty is required and at times other operators duties for vacations and sick leave have to be covered. Subject to chemical hazards.

D or C Level Certification hiring range is $23.57 to $25.01.
B Level Certification hiring range is $25.93 to $27.51.

Qualifications:
Qualifications for the position are as follows:

Must have extensive knowledge in testing water quality, i.e., pH, chlorine, hardness and turbidity.
Must have extensive knowledge in the care and use of chemicals.
Must have extensive knowledge of the operation and repair of machinery and equipment in the treatment facility.
Must have the ability to diagnose facility problems.
Must be able to obtain a State of Colorado Water Treatment Plant Class B/A Certification.
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent, supplemented by three years related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Certified D Operator preferred.
Must have a valid Colorado Driver License.
Must be able to obtain a State of Colorado Water Treatment Plant C Certification within two years of hire.
