The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is responsible for the management of over 61,000 acres of watershed lands and 150-miles of rights-of-way. Located in three counties, the watershed lands contain the water supply storage, transmission, and treatment systems which serve 2.7 million people. The Natural Resources and Lands Management Division provides direction for watershed protection, planning, research, operations, and training.
The Ecological Resources Section within the SFPUC Natural Resources and Lands Management Division is currently seeking two interns to help protect and restore the natural resources of SFPUC watershed lands in San Mateo (near Hillsborough) and Alameda (near Sunol) Counties. The work will involve environmental compliance, habitat restoration, monitoring and conservation projects and the selected candidate will gain experience with environmental specialties such as botany, wildlife biology, vegetation management, hydrology, forestry, integrated pest management, fisheries, environmental regulations, compliance, and planning.
Example duties include:
- Monitoring terrestrial and aquatic wildlife and habitats in support of mitigation, restoration, and routine watershed management activities to comply with regulatory requirements and SFPUC stewardship policies
- Performing hands-on habitat restoration duties including planting, weeding and raking.
- Seed collecting in SFPUC Watersheds for seed banking, restoration, and landscaping projects.
- Assisting with wildlife and/or plant data collection and management using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and ArcGIS
- Participating in public educational material development.
- Supervising volunteers participating in habitat restoration activities.
- Preparing reports and correspondence related to natural resources projects.
Qualifications:
- Enrollment or graduation from (within 6 months) a biology or environmental management related field at an accredited University or community college.
- 3-4 years of biology education or experience (including but not limited to botany, ecology, wildlife biology, horticulture, environmental science, and natural resources).
- A familiarity with or desire to learn about biological and ecological concepts.
- Interest in ecological restoration and endangered species management.
- Ability to work independently and assume a leadership role as needed.
- Great communication skills, respectful work approach, and the ability to speak and write clearly and effectively.

Starting Pay: $36.65 to $41.2375
Eligibility: Completion of at least two years of college from an accredited college or university.
Schedule: The position will be part time (20 hours/week) and will require some weekend work. The duration of the internship is 12 months, with an opportunity to extend based on performance and necessity. The position start date is TBD depending on the selected applicant’s availability.
Location: One position is based in Sunol, CA with occasional travel to the SFPUC Peninsula Watershed (Millbrae) and SFPUC headquarters at 525 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco while the other position is based at SFPUC headquarters in San Francisco with occasional travel to Sunol, CA and Millbrae, CA.
