BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this position is to provide timely and pertinent information relative to crime and crash patterns as well as trends; to assist operational and administrative personnel in planning the deployment of resources prevention and suppression of criminal activities; aiding the investigative process by providing information which helps increase the timely apprehension of offenders and the clearance of cases.
The position will research, compile, analyze and interpret statistical data from a variety of sources including offense and arrest reports, crash reports and citations, census, economic and demographic reports and related data; research and track modus operandi factors and discern crime series or patterns by studying and linking common spatial and temporal factors and following up by reporting information at patrol briefings, COMPSTAT, command staff, city council and in public forums. Work involves extensive reading, data analyses and development of links between criminals and crime groups. Reports and charts are developed to be disseminated to the Department.
Qualifications:
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of GIS software tools
Knowledge of mapping techniques
Knowledge of criminological theory and practice
Knowledge of technical and scientific writing
Knowledge of the Data-Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety (DDACTS) operational model
Skills in using Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables/Charts) and other suite products
Skills in data cleaning and mining
Skills in using reporting software
Skills in basic database entry
Skills using network/link analysis software
Skills in research and presentation/public speaking
Skills in time management
Ability to solve crime and disorder problems
Ability to write clearly, succinctly, and comprehensively
Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and orally
Ability to organize and plan
Ability to foster and maintain relationships with other City departments and personnel
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with major course work in Criminal Justice, Social Science, or in a related field. Experience may substitute for education on a year to year basis up to a maximum of four (4) years.
Minimum two (2) years of experience required in research, crime or intelligence analysis, and/or the interpretation of law enforcement data. A Master's Degree in a relevant field of study may be substituted for two (2) years of experience.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A Valid Texas Class C driver’s license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record
Ability to pass a background investigation; may be required to obtain federal secret security clearance
Will be required to obtain National Crime Information Center and Texas Crime Information Center certifications within ¬¬¬six (6) months of employment
Preferred: Certification by the International Association of Crime Analysts or the International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts
