PARK GENERAL MAINTENANCE WORKER III (14767, GRADE L05)
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), a six-time National Recreation and Parks Association Gold Medal Award Winner, is seeking a Stormwater Maintenance Worker III, to work within Montgomery County Department of Parks. The department serves a diverse population of over one million residents in Montgomery County, Maryland, and manages 419 parks on more than 37,000 acres of parkland. The Department has an annual operating budget of over $100 million, a six-year Capital Improvement Program of over $180 million, and a career staff of nearly 800 employees. The Southern Parks Division Stormwater Management Team maintains over 250 stormwater facilities, over 45 of these facilities are bioretention facilities. Many of the bioretention facilities are situated in highly visible areas within a park and present a focal point within the park layout. These facilities require a high level of maintenance. While primarily being a stormwater facility, they also serve as a wildlife habitat and a landscape feature. The Stormwater Management team is responsible for the non-structural maintenance of various types of stormwater facilities, such as bioretention facilities, dry ponds, wet ponds, wetland ponds, sand filters, infiltration trenches, and bioswales. The typical maintenance work includes weeding of bioretention facilities, planting of new facilities and supplemental planting of existing bioretention facilities; pruning shrubs and trees, removing non-native invasive vines, mulching, raking, leaf blowing, edging bioretention beds, weed eating, removing trash from facilities, mowing facility embankments, removing sediment accumulation on inflows and outflows, and performing minor erosion repairs. The successful candidate will be able to identify native and non-native plants in bioretention facilities and assist in the instruction, supervision and training of less experienced staff in the care of bioretention. The candidate will maintain, manage, and monitor the plantings in bioretention facilities and assist in making recommendations for appropriate plantings, record keeping of plant material in bioretention facilities, and needs to be able to work outside in a wide range of weather conditions. Additional skills include operation of vehicles, specialized landscape equipment and utilizes a variety of hand and power tools used in gardening and landscape maintenance work, performs preventative maintenance and minor repair on equipment. The candidate will have knowledge of principles of stormwater management including types of stormwater management facilities, basic design principles, and routine maintenance tasks is a plus.
Qualifications:
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT DUTIES: • Principles and practices of planting, pruning and general care of plants, flowers, trees, shrubs and turf; • Methods, tools, materials and practices of landscape gardening; • Various plant materials and appropriate use; • An understanding of IPM for plant healthcare in the landscape; • Soil preparation and enrichment; • Basic math to calculate areas and mix chemical solutions; • Computer equipment and software applications related to assignment; • Safe work practices used in gardening and landscaping work, including the use of personal protective equipment; • Typical grounds maintenance equipment use
