SUMMARY: Operates all plant processes for the wastewater treatment plants.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

-Operates, monitors, and maintains plant processes such as plant flow control, biological balance, and wastewater, sludge, and effluent processing.
-Monitors on-line analytical equipment, takes samples, performs laboratory analyses, reports results, and makes adjustments to processes.
-Maintains records for State quality monitoring, State and Federal standards, and records of plant operations.
-Handles chemicals such as chlorine, corrosives, and asphyxiants.
-Coordinates responses to alarms and emergencies at facilities.
-Inspects and maintains process instrumentation and equipment.
-May write operating procedures of plant processes.
-May assist in the design and implementation of new systems and processes.
-May provide training for crew members.
-May act as lead operator on assigned shifts or projects; may supervise assigned staff in absence of operations supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.


Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the necessary functions of this position.

-Knowledge of state, local, and departmental water quality standards and biosolids regulations.
-Must progress to a Class A Wastewater Certified Operation level within 66 months of hire date.
-Must maintain a Class A Wastewater Certified Operation Level once achieved.
-Knowledge of standard and emergency operating procedures.
-Ability to handle hazardous materials in a safe manner.
-Ability to interpret and apply City policies and safety regulations.
-Ability to use Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Centralized Maintenance Management Systems
-Ability to coordinate teams and projects.
-Ability to read blue prints and schematics.
-Ability to interface effectively and collaboratively with City staff and the general public
-Ability to work in a high functioning team environment
-Good verbal and written communication skills.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); two to five years related experience in wastewater plant operations; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Entry level operators required to have "D" operator's license or ability to obtain within six months of hire; Journey level operators require "A" operator's license.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

-Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
-Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
-Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

REASONING ABILITY:

-Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
-Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

-Valid driver's license.
-Confined Space Entry Certification.
-Colorado Class D through A Wastewater Operators Certification.
-Forklift Certification.
-Lock out/Tag out Certification.
-CPR/First Aid Certification
-SCBA training
-EMS 14001 Awareness training

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee would encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places; risk of electrical shock, and explosives. The employee may be required to work regular shifts for 24 hour plant operations. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
