Our client, Metro Wastewater Reclamation District (MWRD or the District) seeks a General Counsel (GC). MWRD is the wastewater treatment authority for most of the metropolitan Denver, Colorado area. With a total budget of $230M and approximately 420 staff, MWRD operates a non-combined wastewater system that serves about 1.8 million people across a 715-square mile service area.

MWRD is governed by a 38-member Board of Directors and serves 60 local governments that are comprised of both cities and sanitation districts.

The General Counsel is appointed by and reports to the Board of Directors. The GC represents the District and gives legal advice to the Board of Directors, the District Manager, and the other departments and divisions of the District. Working closely with the Board, District Manager and District staff, the GC assists in the implementation of the District’s Strategic Plan and acts as a trusted legal and business advisor.

Qualifications:
Qualifications sought:

• JD degree from an accredited law school. Admittance to practice law in all Colorado State Courts and Federal Courts is required.

• Successful experience advising/working with public boards or commissions.

• Significant experience with contracts, particularly construction contracts, including professional services contracts.

• Knowledge of wastewater, western water law and permitting issues.

• Experience in regulatory and municipal law.

• Knowledge of the business side of the wastewater industry or a utility.

• Knowledge of employment law and human resources issues.
