Summary: Under general supervision, performs maintenance and operations of treatment plant machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption. Maintains and operates the Town’s water distribution system, including emergency assistance with other divisions as needed.
Series Characteristics:
Water Treatment Plant Operator I: This is an entry level classification. Incumbents typically perform a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled tasks under direct supervision. This classification is typically used in trainee positions, or over the initial tenure of employment with the incumbent being advanced to Water Treatment Plant Operator II as the difficulty of their duties increase.
Water Treatment Plant Operator II: This is a journey level classification. This position will not generally make decisions independently about the execution of work but will be able to perform assigned duties without need of direct supervision or specific procedures being consistently outlined.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following.
• Performs all functions necessary to operate and maintain electric motors, pumps, valves, and other equipment necessary for the treatment and distribution of water to Town customers.
• Inserts specified amounts of chemicals into water or adjusts automatic devices that inject specified amounts of chemicals into water treatment or distribution systems to disinfect, deodorize, and clarify water.
• Reads and repairs water meters as needed.
• Completes daily water and wastewater reports, records, and data logs.
• Operates Town vehicles and equipment such as, but not limited to, backhoe, dump trucks, loaders, tractor mowers, vac-truck, trailer jet machine, boat, etc.
• Supports the operations and maintenance of the Town’s wastewater collection system as needed.
• Assists with repairs to water and wastewater lines, valve boxes, fire hydrants, manholes, metering equipment and other similar water and wastewater assets.
• Assists all Public Works Divisions when needed.
• Monitors and manages routine vehicle maintenance on Town vehicles and equipment, and report needed maintenance to supervisor.
• Follows the safe work practices and procedures as set forth by the Town.
• Maintains an effective, courteous working relationship with supervisors, co-workers, representatives from other agencies, and public.
Qualifications:
Certificates and Licenses:
A valid Colorado driver’s license with a good driving history. This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
Water Operator I: Colorado Water Treatment Plant Operator Class D required or must be obtained within 12 months of employment. The selected candidate must have or be able to obtain a Water Distribution Class II Certificate
Water Operator II: Colorado Water Treatment Plant Operator Class C required. The selected candidate must have or be able to obtain a Water Distribution Class II Certificate
