Regular Full Time with Benefits
Mon-Fri 40 hrs per week, OT as needed.

DEFINITION: As Water Utility Tech: Perform a wide variety of technical duties related to the operation and maintenance of the utility’s systems and treatment facilities. As Lead: Perform a wide variety of advanced and skilled technical duties related to the operation and maintenance of the Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection, and Stormwater systems.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: As a Water Utility Tech, calculate operating performance and load capacities, flow rates, pressures, levels, and related operations and maintenance parameters of the various systems. Locate problem areas in the field and plants, investigate and take corrective action when appropriate. Perform duties as part of a work crew during emergency maintenance and operation. Locate and mark lines. Assist with excavation activities. Perform line and valve shut-offs. Perform manual labor such as digging, moving materials, welding, and making necessary repairs. Inspect, troubleshoot, install, and repair utility equipment. Monitor and maintain various storage, pumping, and treatment facilities. Tap water and sewer lines. Maintain and clean city owned tools and equipment. Perform preventative maintenance and minor repair on equipment including oil changes, washing and cleaning vehicles, changing of filters, etc. Provide engineering staff with field information and collaborate with other City staff on system and facility operations and maintenance. Take and record various readings such as meters, flow monitors, equipment, pumps, etc. Maintain associated records including work orders, inventories, etc. Respond to service calls, including emergency “on-call” shifts as assigned, with an ability to respond to a site within the established timeframe. Perform inspections and installations of residential water meters and related devices. Respond to inquiries from customers regarding the full range of duties and the corresponding city, dept. or division policy or work practice. Perform routine field investigations particularly for residential customers regarding high bills, leaks, tampering, equipment malfunctions, or other complaints/problems. Conduct in-shop testing of equipment and perform related repairs. Operate snow plows and liquid de-icer trucks while performing snow and ice removal. Operate street sweeping equipment. Operate a variety of tools and equipment ranging from small hand tools to heavy equipment. Perform other duties as assigned.

In the WUT Lead capacity: Employees working in this career level job classification perform a variety of advanced technical tasks related to the operation and maintenance of distribution, collection, and stormwater systems. Water Utility Technician Lead employees are expected to work in a self-directed manner and to provide leadership on some projects. Project leadership requires active and independent learning skills, and the ability to review construction records and documents, conduct technology reviews, and effectively troubleshoot problems. Employee must also demonstrate strong collaboration skills with other employees to address shared work assignments and to facilitate sharing and acting upon critical information. Examples of tasks and duties for which experience must be demonstrated include but are not limited to the following, in addition to those of the Water Utility Tech: Research technical problems using vendor manuals and internet searches. Help Supervisors with laying out projects and coordinating employee and contractor work. Assist with development of standard operating procedures and checklists. Assist with overall setup and deployment of the computerized work management system including entering equipment name plate information, scheduling maintenance tasks recommended by equipment manufacturer, and opening and closing work orders. Assist contractors and City approved service providers with and constructions projects as assigned. Troubleshoot and repair routine meter problems. Assist with street maintenance projects and operations as assigned.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed outside and inside both night and day shifts, under varying and extreme weather conditions. Work includes exposure to noise, dust, gases and oils, solvents and chemicals. Coordination of eyes, hands, legs and body is needed. Position requires the ability to work under time constraints and in confined spaces and the use of respirators.



Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS: For WUT: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade plus one year of experience performing water and sewer utility work. For WUT Lead: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade plus three years of experience performing distribution, collection, and stormwater system repair, installation, and maintenance. Special Qualifications: Possession of Class “B” Colorado CDL with “N” Tanker endorsement within six months of employment. For WUT: Depending on assigned work area, the employee must obtain Class I Distribution and Class I Collection Certification or Class D Water or Wastewater Operator Certification within 12 months of hire date. Employee must demonstrate progressive certification up to the “III” level in either Collection or Distribution and up to the “II” level in the other within four years of hire. For WUT Lead: Must possess either a Class 4 Distribution and Class 3 Collection Certification or a Class 3 Distribution and Class 4 Collection Certification, or ability to obtain during probationary period. Water or Wastewater treatment operators certificates may be accepted in place of the lower of the two required certifications depending on assignment.

Selection process will include complete job description review, personal interview, physical abilities test, drug screen, and criminal background check. CDL holders will be required to complete the FMCSR disclosure form.
