Brief Description
The Office of Institutional Research and Planning (IRP) serves as George Washington University’s official source for the gathering and reporting of university data (excluding financial and facilities information) and provides data for federal and state surveys (e.g. IPEDS, State Council of Higher Education for Virginia), accreditation agencies (e.g. Middle States), and publications (e.g. US News, the Common Data Set).

The office provides official data on enrollment, retention, graduation rates, faculty and staff statistics, and much more. It helps the community assess institutional effectiveness, including assistance with university benchmarking and academic program review. The research analyst is a key team member in the office of Institutional Research and Planning. IRP is part of the larger office of Academic Planning and Assessment (APA), which includes the Office of Survey Analytics and the Office of Institutional Analytics. APA is also responsible for publishing the University Bulletin. The office is located in the heart of GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus, just a few blocks west of the White House.

Job Details
Institutional Research Analyst Duties:
  • Analyze, evaluate, interpret, and summarize a wide variety of institutional data, providing insights into topics in a timely, thorough and accurate manner. 
  • Work collaboratively with personnel in Business Intelligence and in the office to maintain, verify and improve the university data warehouse and to enhance data information systems. Extract data from the student information system (Banner) and the data warehouse to develop reports and fulfill data requests. 
  • Respond to requests for institutional data and provide data to external organizations.
  • Produce mandatory reports and submissions to external stakeholders (e.g. IPEDS, US News, Common Data Set) and provide benchmarking analytics.
  • Work collaboratively with analysts, directors, and other departments on various projects.
  • Develop, maintain, and update data visualizations for use in presentations using PowerPoint or similar software.
  • Develop, maintain, and update dashboards in response to the information needs of the campus using Power BI or Tableau.
  • Stay current on best practices, emerging trends, and regulatory changes in institutional research and higher education.
  • Collect, organize, and present data for use in academic program reviews and accreditation projects such as Middle States
