Associate Vice President for The Office of Institutional Research & Analysis

Binghamton University invites nominations and applications for Associate Vice President for The Office of Institutional Research & Analysis. Binghamton University places immense value in the use of institutional data in support of the University’s short and long-term decision-making regarding policy, strategic planning, and resource allocation. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Associate Vice President for Institutional Research & Analysis will have a highly visible role within the University’s analytics community and be instrumental in leveraging Binghamton’s data assets to drive institutional success and operational efficiency. The AVP will design and execute data and analytics strategies, participate in the formulation of related university policy, oversee governance practices, and build relationships across academic and administrative units to foster a collaborative, data-informed culture that directly supports strategic planning, resource allocation and program and student success.

Since its founding in 1946, Binghamton University has built a national reputation for academic quality, innovative research and scholarship, and educational value. The University’s excellence is grounded in a stellar undergraduate education, bolstered by cutting-edge graduate programs, a rapidly expanding research enterprise, and a commitment to civic engagement in the local community and across the state. Consistently ranked among the top 75 universities by U.S. News & World Report, Binghamton — one of four research universities in the SUNY system — stands out as one of the most selective and public institutions in the nation. Binghamton received a staggering 60,000 undergraduate applications for fall 2025, welcoming approximately 3,000 new students to the class of 2029.

Binghamton is in a period of remarkable growth. Since 2012, undergraduate enrollment has increased by 19% and graduate enrollment by 40%. With significant faculty expansion supported by a SUNY-wide hiring initiative, Binghamton has dozens of new faculty members in key research areas and plans to bring on even more in the future. In 2023-24, Binghamton University had $66.9 million in research expenditures (a five-year increase of 38%), and it is home to four federally funded research centers.

Binghamton University is poised for a bright future, continuing its trajectory of excellence and innovation. The institution’s future is guided by a strategic plan — the Road Map to Premier — that keeps the campus moving forward to achieve its goal of becoming the premier public university of the 21st century.

Responsibilities for the position include establishing data and analytics as a core institutional asset, defining the vision for data strategy, and implementing effective data and analytics models and processes to support strategic decision-making. The AVP will champion data literacy across the university, lead data governance efforts to ensure the integrity of data assets and provide innovative insights that align institutional goals with actionable outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as social sciences, mathematics, economics, data science, education, business, statistics or a related field
  • Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible leadership, and team building, experience within institutional research or a related field in higher education, supervising teams and driving key initiatives or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Proven experience with complex relational databases and advanced data analytics techniques (statistical analysis, data mining, predictive modeling, survey design, etc.)
  • Expertise with at least one statistical software (e.g. Python, R, SAS) and query tools (e.g. SQL)
  • Previously demonstrated experience with storytelling through data visualization software (e.g. Power BI) to create comprehensive and actionable dashboards.
  • Understanding of enterprise systems (e.g. Ellucian Banner).
  • Previously demonstrated experience with data governance programs, ensuring data integrity, accuracy, and compliance with institutional policies and regulatory standards.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to clearly translate and present complex data findings into actionable items to non-technical stakeholders both internally and externally and at all levels of the organization.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Salary for the role is currently anticipated to range from $180,000 to $190,000, commensurate with experience. Please submit your resume and cover letter as soon as possible using our Talent Profile.
