The Data Analyst will help advance Carnegie Mellon’s efforts in external reporting and cross-campus data partnerships. This role requires expertise in data analysis, data visualization, survey tools, and strong problem-solving skills. This position will combine data reporting and survey management with data visualization and communication skills.
This position collaborates with business leaders across divisions including but not limited to the provost division, academic colleges, enrollment management, student success, finance and budget, student affairs, human resources, and computing services. They will collaborate through the Office of Institutional Research and Analysis’s partnership model by ensuring data integrity, privacy compliance, and ethical use of university information. A successful candidate in this role will combine technical aptitude with strong communication skills to ensure accurate and effective reporting and effective collaboration to meet business needs.Core responsibilities include:
External Reporting- Serve as the university’s primary reporter to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and ensure timely and accurate submission of required governmental reports.
- Assist with external reporting to publications such as the College Board, Princeton Review, Pittsburgh Business Times, and others.
- Assist with reporting to university consortia such as the Association of American Universities Data Exchange (AAUDE), the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP), Pittsburgh Council on Higher Education (PCHE), and others.
- Verify the correctness of the data reported externally and make recommendations based on these analyses and benchmarking data.
- Assist with additional external reporting submissions as needed.
Dashboard Development and Internal Reporting- Design and implement data visualization dashboards that translate institutional data into actionable insights for university stakeholders at various levels.
- Assist in implementing the university’s data strategy and maintaining the Office of Institutional Research and Analysis’s partnership model.
- Develop new dashboards and reports to support university partners using PowerBI.
- Assist in managing permissions and data access to published PowerBI and Tableau reports.
- Assist with converting existing Tableau dashboards and reports to PowerBI.
Survey Management- Distribute surveys, manage contact lists, monitor results, and create reports for university partners.
- Assist with gathering requirements for new surveys and revisions of existing surveys.
- Assist with communicating survey results and summarizing survey results into data stories and action items.
Collaboration and Facilitation with Business Partners and Collaborators- Collaborate with data partners in gathering requirements and developing data analytics and qualitative solutions to support the University’s academic mission and operational objectives.
- Manage ad hoc data request process and ensure accurate and timely results are delivered.
- Communicate complex and sometimes conflicting information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Identify data challenges and/or roadblocks to project success and recommend solutions to overcome barriers to project completion.

Qualifications:- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
- 0-2 years of related work experience.
- Proficiency with any domain-specific language (such as Python, R, SAS, STATA, MATLAB, etc.) required.
- Experience with data analysis and generating reports using business intelligence tools required.
- Experience using survey tools (such as Qualtrics, Survey Monkey, BlockSurvey, etc.) required.
- Experience utilizing common generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, NotbeookLM, Microsoft CoPilot, Claude, etc.) required.
- A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
