Job Summary
The Director for Strategic Analysis and Decision Support provides analytics to support decision-making at all levels of the University. The director leads the acquisition and transformation of institutional data into strategic, accessible, widely-available and actionable information. The Director is responsible for the data analysis that is used to set strategic goals, develop metrics, and measure progress, and also more broadly to understand the University's position in the higher education environment. At all times, the Director provides data presented with contextual intelligence utilizing their understanding higher education policy and trends, as well as campus policy and trends while maintaining appropriate privacy and human subject considerations.

Job Details
Essential Functions
  • Provide data and analysis to support decision-making at every level of the University. Manage the Office of Institutional Research. Oversee the acquisition and transformation of data for use by the academic leadership in decision-making. Oversee traditional reporting responsibilities for the campus while leveraging IT tools to enable business units to perform their own analysis, as needed, and provide support for interpretation of results.
  • Inform and guide the University's long-term goals and strategic objectives through strategic analysis. Leverage the data and analysis to allow the campus to set strategic goals, develop metrics, and measure progress towards them. Contribute to the understanding of the University's position in the higher education environment. Participate in the University's strategic planning, including yearly strategic planning updates. Develop management dashboards to allow decision-makers ready information and analysis. Benchmark the University against itself and other institutions.
  • Organize and manage data governance at the University, and act as liaison for data governance initiatives within the UMass System. Build and foster data management and governance systems at the University that promote understanding and collaboration among the Amherst campus business units and which allow for collaboration across the UMass System.
  • Conduct and/or oversee in-depth analyses, using advanced statistical techniques. Use predictive modeling to conduct analyses pertaining to areas such as student persistence and success, space planning.
  • Promote the University’s commitment to a productive workplace environment.
    Build effective partnerships throughout the University by freely sharing appropriate information and providing assistance when needed. Ensure optimum service to all internal and external partners in response to all requests for service and information. Maintain an environment that is welcoming to persons of all backgrounds, nationalities, and roles.
Other Functions
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.
    Position requires working across campuses, and occasional attendance at off-site meetings. Requires work with confidential data, such as student ID numbers, SSNs, addresses, HR data, etc.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
  • A Master's degree in Sociology, Education, Economics, Statistics, Operations Research, or a related field. At least 5 years of progressive responsibility and professional experience in a higher education institution working with University data -- admissions, student, finance, financial aid, and others.
  • Experience with SAS and SPSS programming and reporting.
  • Ability to collaborate with senior leadership, work effectively and independently on multiple priorities with strict deliverable dates. Handle highly sensitive/confidential information.
  • Experience working with both business users and technical development teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and conduct complex research projects utilizing advanced statistical skills including experience developing descriptive and predictive models. Familiar with using data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau) and tool sets for data extraction, manipulation, and analysis (e.g. SQL, R, Python, SAS, SPSS).
  • Excellent communication skills and experience presenting findings to decision-makers.
  • Knowledge of the higher education policy context nationally, including data policy issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organization and time management skills, including judgment and accuracy. Proven ability to prioritize responsibilities and meet deadlines in a consistent, timely and professional manner.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
  • A Doctoral/Terminal degree in Sociology, Education, Economics, Statistics, Operations Research, or a related field. At least 5 years of progressive responsibility and professional experience in a higher education institution working with University data -- admissions, student, finance, financial aid, and others.
  • Experience at a U.S. research university.

Salary Information

Commensurate with experience.
