Brief Description
The Director of Institutional Research provides strategic and management leadership in the systematic collection, evaluation, and distribution of data that is used for institutional decision making, planning, reporting, assessment, and policy development. The successful candidate will use data to support planning and decision making, collect and manage data measuring progress in reaching institutional strategic goals, skillfully identify and extract the most relevant data from a variety of sources, and adeptly interpret and communicate these data. Reporting to the Provost, the Director is a member of the academic leadership team and supports the work of all senior administrative officials.

Job Details

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the work of the President and other senior administrative officials by providing accurate and timely data that can be used for institutional planning and assessment purposes, as well as the annual budget development process.
  • Manage all external and internal requests for data and reporting, including formal (e.g., IPEDS; federal, state, and regional accreditors; enrollment projections) and informal (e.g., faculty surveys, other ad hoc reports) requests. Serve as the institutional representative for data consortia (e.g., Higher Education Data Sharing consortium) and guidebook and rankings publishers (e.g., U.S. News).
  • Produce an array of annual and periodic reports (e.g., the University Fact Book).
  • Strengthen institutional assessment and effectiveness processes and play an active role in all accreditation and re-accreditation efforts.
  • Establish methods and systems for data retrieval, modeling, and analysis.
  • Collaborate with and provide thought leadership to members of the University community who need data identified, collected, analyzed, or interpreted to meet institutional objectives.
  • Distribute external and internal data to institutional stakeholders and communicate about these data in a compelling manner with particular attention to understandability and ease of use.
  • Steward data for the institution, and ensure that the institution is using the highest quality data for decision making, planning, and assessing institutional effectiveness.
  • Maintain the Institutional Research website.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in a research-related field or an equivalent combination of academic degree achievement and professional knowledge.
  • Minimum of three to five years of professional experience in higher education research, data management, and assessment.

Desired Skills and Experiences:

  • Strong analytical skills and advanced experience with one or more statistical analysis packages (e.g., R, SPSS, SAS).
  • Experience using reporting tools for building queries and extracting data from relational databases. A strong working knowledge of SQL is highly desirable.
  • Experience with a student information system, Ellucian Banner preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, which combined with excellent interpersonal skills, will result in the ability to present data in a clear and engaging manner, easily understood by institutional stakeholders at all levels.
  • Organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage high-level projects and plan strategically.
  • Experience designing survey instruments and coordinating survey activities.
  • Ability to lead IR initiatives independently and manage multiple projects concurrently, but also to quickly pivot and address emergent challenges with direct support.
