Brief Description
The position of Institutional Research Analyst performs the following functions:
 
1. Plans and implements research studies, including selecting and analyzing data, preparing statistical and narrative reports, designing appropriate research methods, including the use of external studies, surveys and focus groups, and recommending the further collection of required data elements by administrative and academic staff;
2. Contributes to the development and support of University research databases and automated reporting systems;
3. Recommends, uses and supports various query tools for accessing data in research and other databases;
4. Analyzes data using univariate and multivariate techniques and interprets and reports findings using appropriate tabular, graphical and narrative methods;
5. Compiles data for federal- and state- mandated accountability reporting and grant reporting;
6. Contributes to the content and layout of a university dashboard for internal and external consumption;
7. Leads or participates in meetings to better understand the information needs of various University constituents.

Summary of essential job functions:
  1. Develops and Deploys Research Reports (50%)

    • Develops reports (internal and external) in areas including but not limited to:

      • Enrollment, Revenue and Cost Analyzes

      • Student Persistence and Completion

      • Student Assessment

      • Program Reviews

      • Grant Development

      • University Advancement

  2. Collects additional data as needed, using external research sources and deploying surveys and focus groups in order to enhance information that supports data-driven decision making.

     Analyzes large university data sets to discern patterns using appropriate statistical techniques and machine learning (40%)

    • Performs predictive analytics to better understand relationships between data for decision makers

       

  3. Collaborates with the university community on Information Needs (10%)

    • Updates university dashboard.

    • Recommends and support various query tools for accessing data.

    • Works closely with other offices (e.g. Registrar, Admission, Financial Aid, Information Technology) to improve data collection, storage, and reporting.

    • Collaborates with and support the planning and evaluation needs of the data integrity team, assessment leaders, faculty, and academic administrators.

  4. Other duties as required

Qualifications: A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university is required in areas such as social science research, behavioral science, information science, computer science, or mathematics, or a related discipline; must have at least two years of experience performing data-driven analysis, including experience in data analysis, research, database design, system analysis, and so on; knowledge of data science in general and machine learning in particular; knowledge of advanced statistical techniques related to sampling and projection; higher education experience, including an understanding of academic and administrative processes; experience with standard external reports in higher education such as IPEDS, the Common Dataset, US News rankings, etc.  Ability to learn new technologies quickly and proficiently; ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently; ability to interact with a wide range of users and technicians; ability to remain calm under stressful circumstances and/or aggressive deadlines.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent customer service skills; strong organizational skills. Proficiency in Data science tools such as R-Stat, Pandas etc; proficiency in query techniques associated with relational databases (SQL); proficiency in predictive analytics; proficiency in the PeopleSoft system. Experience with SharePoint.
