Brief Description
The Assessment Specialist, to be located at the LIU Brooklyn Campus, will provide design, measurement, analysis, and reporting expertise to ensure the quality of assessment of program-level and general education student learning in support of regional (Middle States) and discipline-based accreditation expectations, as well as internal academic program review procedures. The Assessment Specialist will work closely with faculty to develop effective assessment initiatives that will yield results applicable to the improvement of student learning outcomes. Ability to help faculty meaningfully relate assessment to curricular and pedagogical needs is critical. The Assessment Specialist is expected to develop ongoing relationships with faculty that support a culture of faculty-driven assessment. The Assessment Specialist will provide leadership and coordinate activities of the assessment fellows, as well as provide them with training and professional development as appropriate. The Assessment Specialist will work with dean representatives and/or school/college assessment liaisons to provide appropriate support in order to work towards school/college and program-level participation and buy-in for all assessment activities. The Assessment Specialist will have similar duties related to LIU’s branch campuses. The Assessment Specialist will coordinate as appropriate with the LIU-Post Assessment Specialist and work closely with the Brooklyn Outcomes Assessment Committee Chair(s). This position reports to the Senior Director of Accreditation & Assessment within Academic Affairs.

Job Details

The selected candidate will:

  • Serve as a member of the University-wide Assessment Leadership Team;
  • Supervise, train, and support the Faculty Assessment Fellows;
  • Review, rate, and provide feedback to a select number of annual academic program outcomes assessment reports;
  • Work with individual academic programs as a resource for quantitative and qualitative:
    • data collection instruments and techniques for assessment;
    • data analysis, interpretation, and reporting techniques and procedures for assessment;
    • practices related to reliability, validity, and trustworthiness to support integrity and accuracy of assessment data;
  • Oversee the process for assessment of student learning outcomes for general education and the core curriculum, including working with the relevant Assessment Fellows to revise the process for the new Core curriculum;
  • Support programs regarding assessment of student learning for discipline-based accreditations, including taking steps throughout the accreditation cycle to help ensure that the administration, analysis and reporting of assessment activities is conducted in a manner and time frame that will facilitate accreditation;
  • Design and implement faculty development opportunities regarding all areas of assessment of student learning;
  • Identify, design, and distribute faculty resources related to assessment of student learning;
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and disseminate assessment results to various campus stakeholders;
  • Serve as liaison between the Deans’ offices and program-level leadership for identifying and addressing assessment needs within a school/college;
  • Provide content for University Outcomes Assessment and Sharepoint websites;
  • Support faculty use of CampusLabs, a survey software system utilized by the university, and/or other software systems that might be utilized for accreditation and assessment purposes;
  • Communicate the policies and procedures for tracking, analyzing, and reporting assessment data;
  • Travel as necessary to the branch campuses and University Center;
  • Perform other duties related to those listed above as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in social/behavioral science, education or related field with experience in research and assessment, preferably in higher education;
  • at least two years of professional experience in academic assessment; knowledge of assessment processes, student learning outcomes, and accountability issues;
  • knowledge of the role played by outcomes assessment in supporting professional and regional accreditations;
  • knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research design and measurement techniques, including sampling procedures and issues of reliability and validity; demonstrated experience in designing, administering, and analyzing assessment instruments (e.g., rubrics, test blueprints, and surveys) and results;
  • excellent analytical, oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or earned doctorate in social/behavioral science, education or related field;
  • five years or more of professional assessment related experience;
  • substantial teaching experience in a college or university setting;
  • experience with data management (data gathering or storage) and/or assessment software or online platforms;
  • experience supporting professional and/or regional accreditations.

Salary:   Commensurate with experience.

FLSA Classification: Exempt
