Brief Description
The Data & Visualization Specialist (Senior) collaborates with all areas of Institutional Research & Planning to develop engaging and effective information design. They proactively engage with IR&P clients and the larger University community to gather and synthesize requirements. They use graphic design and data visualizations to present information, and work jointly with ITS to promote data literacy and data governance throughout the University.

IR&P aggregates and presents data to stakeholders in multiple ways, including through the use of BC’s enterprise data warehouse. The role of the Data & Visualization Specialist is to complement the larger, routinely-generated data warehouse reports with bespoke charts and visualizations built using tools and techniques that are the best fit for individual projects.

The Data & Visualization Specialist (Senior) will be encouraged to prototype new methods for data visualization and communication, and will focus on answering specific one-time research questions rather than building reports meant to be run year-after-year.

Job Details

Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with IR&P and partners across the University to strategically design communications to share with the BC community on survey results, planning efforts, and institutional data.
  • Maintain and improve a portfolio of annually-produced reports and visualizations.
  • Create new infographics and striking visualizations to enhance IR&P projects.
  • Prototype new methods for creating and displaying data visualizations (e.g. JavaScript and Python libraries, new business intelligence and artificial intelligence tools, etc.)
  • Work with stakeholders to gather and synthesize requirements. Proactively create prototypes and suggest data presentations.
  • Facilitate discussions to help colleagues and leaders better understand data and how they can use it.
  • Collaborate with campus partners and Information Technology Services on the establishment, ongoing work, and analysis related to a University data governance program.

Title and salary commensurate with relevant experience based on the following titles and hiring ranges:
1-5 years of professional experience (non-senior): $59,560 - $74,450
5+years of professional experience (senior): $65,800 - $82,250

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • One year of experience in a quantitative discipline, as well as art or design.
  • An online portfolio or samples of work demonstrating strong visual design skills and innovative data visualization work for the web or print.
  • Ability to effectively translate complex information into clear, understandable, and user-friendly presentations.
  • Strong graphic design skills, including proficiency in the Adobe Design Suite (particularly Illustrator and InDesign).
  • Ability to experiment with and learn various business intelligence tools, such as Cognos and Tableau.
  • Basic web editing skills and the ability to learn more advanced development technologies, such as HTML5, CSS, or JavaScript.
  • Have an attention to detail. Ability to spot errors and inconsistencies in large data sets.
  • Basic understanding of descriptive statistics.
  • Ability to synthesize findings to share with colleagues and determine how to apply to department needs.
  • Ability to listen actively and ask questions to help the client clarify their goals and understanding around a problem, data, design, etc.
  • Experience with data literacy or data governance efforts in higher education or elsewhere is a plus.
