9:00am-12:00 pm  MTSS & SLD in Literacy—How the SLP can help (Intermediate Learning Level)

As schools begin to implement a more systematic MTSS process with literacy, it can be difficult to figure out where the special educator/SLP fits in.  This session will build attendees’ depth of knowledge about the MTSS continuum, the SLP’s role in each tier, as well as providing sample informal measures and general education interventions to address the literacy development in students with a specific learning disability and/or a developmental language delay.

Learning Outcomes (after attending this session, attendees will:)
  1. Deepen their understanding of the MTSS continuum.
  2. Be able to explain the role of the SLP in MTSS literacy interventions.
  3. Be able to describe informal measures and interventions to support literacy learning in MTSS.
 Outline:
  • What is MTSS?
  • The SLP’s Role in Each Tier
  • Gathering Informal Data Points
  • General Education Literacy Interventions for Tiers 2 and 3

1:30pm-4:30 pm  Supporting Orthography and Morphology Development through Specialized Interventions (Intermediate Learning Level)

Do you have a student who has been through the MTSS process, still not showing enough growth in literacy skills, and referred for a SPED evaluation?   How will you teach the skills needed to build that student’s knowledge about orthography and morphology?  What materials could you use?  This session will provide answers to these questions and foundational knowledge about instruction of orthography and morphology.  SLPs will leave with ready to use, evidence-based interventions designed for small groups to support orthography and morphology development.

Learning Outcomes (after attending this session, attendees will:)
  1. Be able to explain how orthography and morphology impact literacy.
  2. Be able to describe how to address roadblocks in literacy development through the utilization of data.
  3. Recognize the signs that a student may need a SPED evaluation for literacy.
  4. Be able to describe how to obtain informal measures and interventions to support literacy learning in the speech/language setting.
 Outline:
  • How Orthography and Morphology Impact Literacy Development
  • Handling the Roadblocks in Reading and Spelling Progress
  • When Should a Referral for a SPED Evaluation be made?
  • Analyzing Reading and Spelling Errors
  • Assessing Literacy Skills
  • Interventions for Orthography and Morphology Goals
