Event Description
This training is geared toward
Head Start Transportation Managers, Drivers and Monitors

and will address issues of best practices with an emphasis on safety.
 
The event is designed to meet the four hour ODE Annual Inservice Training requirement for bus drivers and bus aides as described in Ohio’s Pupil Transportation Operation and Safety Rules (3301-83-10(B)).   

IACET CEU's will also be available.

OHSAI will make On-Demand Modules Available
to programs through the fall of 2025.

Registration fee: $50 per participant, discounted to $25 per participant
for agencies subscribing to the OHSAI virtual subscription package.
Programs will be notified when On-Demand modules are available for viewing.

Session Objectives:
Participants will identify rules and practices that ensure safety in transportation services.
Participants will identify skills to create and maintain positive work environments in transportation services.
Participants will apply trauma-informed practice to create safe environments for families and young children.

Self-Care and Mindfulness for Transportation Staff
Helena Michaels, Ohio School Boards Association
Participants will discuss challenges specific to working in transportation positions and the impact of chronic stress. You will learn how mindfulness can improve customer service and communication, and support conflict resolution. Mindfulness practices for adults transporting children will be demonstrated that you can take back and use in daily routines.

School Bus Safety

Participants will review and discuss components of various types of bus inspections and explore how to define and practice defensive driving in order to provide the safest experience possible for the staff and children in your care as Transportation Managers, Drivers and Bus Monitors. Participants will review important safety procedures, managing children, communicating with parents and building better staff relationships by using self-care practices to survive the nervous tension and anxiety we experience.

Communicating with Parents and Special Needs Evacuations
Brent Speas
Effective communication between school bus drivers and caregivers is a cornerstone of successful student transportation programs. Participants will discuss and practice active listening and strategies to manage difficult or volatile situations.
This session will also cover special needs transportation requirements, highlighting different types of restraint systems and methods for rapidly and safely removing children from these systems, as well as evacuation procedures.

Intro to Trauma in a Variety of Early Childhood Settings
Colleen Wallace, Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist
This session will provide an understanding of trauma and its effects on young children and adults in a variety of environments.  It will include a review of evidence-based approaches and practical strategies for creating a variety trauma-informed early childhood settings and interactions.  It will actively engage participants and include discussion and activities.

OHSAI strives to have as many attendees as possible pre-registered and paid. If payment cannot be made by the deadline, please forward a purchase order. 
  • If a registration must be canceled, please do so seven (7) working days prior  to the training. Cancellations must be made in writing.
  • If a cancellation is made after the cutoff (7 working days prior to the training), a $40 administration fee will be applied per canceled person.
  • No refund will be given for cancellations occurring less than 24 hours before event. Alternate participants may attend.   
  • Late Fees: $25.00  (Registrations received after the deadline listed above will be assessed a late fee of $25.00 per person.)
