About the exhibition:
This exhibition documents, in photographs, the original Papaver Rubrum Giganteum (2008) installation of 300 giant poppies conceived and created by Philadelphia artist Gary G. Miller (1951 - 2013). Inspired in part by the approach of the World War I centennial, the poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae, and his fascination with the ubiquitous paper poppies distributed at Memorial Day to honor fallen soldiers, Miller brought this work to fruition over the course of several rs.
Papaver Rubrum Giganteum was selected by Burning Man Festival for a Black Rock City Art Honorarium, underwriting its installation and display in August, 2008 in the Nevada desert. In the spring of 2008, the installation appeared in the meadow at the intersection of Stenton and Northwestern Avenues, under the sponsorship of Woodmere Art Museum and the Morris Arboretum. It remained on view at the Arboretum from April through June, 2008.
In August, 2008, Miller packed up the 300 poppies, transported and installed them in the Nevada desert for the duration of the 2008 Burning Man Festival. The contrast and influence on the art of the two venues is compelling, and was documented by Miller in these photographs. The images now on view were first displayed at Morris Arboretum in 2009, in an exhibition titled Five in the Field, Five in the Desert.
