The 77th Annual Short Courses will be held May 31 - June 5, 2026, at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md
Purpose of the Short Courses: Since 1949, the Short Courses have offered training, information, and insights that enable water and wastewater systems personnel to operate and maintain their facilities in a more effective, safe, and economical manner.  The courses offer innovative ideas and serve as a “refresher” for existing operators.
 
The Short Courses are sponsored by the three parent organizations: Chesapeake Section of the American Water Works (CSAWWA), Water and Waste Operators Association of Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia (WWOA), and Chesapeake Water Environment Association (CWEA).

Courses offered at the 2026 Short Courses include: (All courses have been submitted for MDE TRE credits).  Individual classes of the Superintendent track have been submitted for MDE TRE credits.

Classes run Monday – Thursday for 8 hours (8am-Noon & 1pm-5pm) each day with a final course exam on Friday morning. The Industrial Wastewater course has its final exam on Thursday afternoon. Passing the final course exam while attending a minimum of 80% of the classroom hours earns attendees 1.5x the maximum credit hours.  Superintendent classes consist of single-day classes (Monday - Thursday) only with no exams.
Registration Information: Online registration begins April 1, 2026, and ends at midnight on May 17, 2026.  All payments must be made via credit/debit card.  There will be no walkup or late registrations! Class sizes may be limited, so don’t delay registering.

MDE Certification Exams: In addition to the Short Course exams, the MDE Board of Water and Waste Systems Operators will hold operator certification exams on Friday, June 5, 2026, in Patriot Hall at the college. You must apply separately to the Board to sit for a certification exam held at the Short Courses by May 10th.  Any questions regarding the Certification Exams should be referred directly to Board of Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators staff at 1(800) 633-6101, ext. 3167 or (410) 537-3167 or email at martin.fuhr@maryland.gov. Under no conditions should you contact the college regarding the Short Courses or the MDE Certification exams.
