PACCA Zoom Series: Racial Equity in Early Learning
Description:
As we see events unfold on the national news recently, early childhood educators are aware of their essential role in fostering racial equity in our country.
This 3-part professional development series is designed to help early learning and school-age programs embed racial equity from recruiting, hiring, and on-going training offerings for staff to interactions with children of color. After defining key racial justice terminology such as implicit bias, cultural competency, race, racism, antiracist ally, etc., participants are encouraged to identify concrete ways to embrace racial equity personally and professionally. These Zoom meetings will be informative and interactive, and will provide participants with real resources and supports for classroom situations.
4.5 hours of PA Key Registry (PQAS) credits will be given to registrants who participate in all three meetings
Dates/Times: Fri., July 10, 1 PM - 2:30 PM Fri., July 17, 1 PM - 2:30 PM Fri., July 24, 1 PM - 2:30 pm
Cost: PACCA Members - $20 per person (Includes all 3 meeting times) Non-Members - $45 per person (Includes all 3 meeting times)

Presenters:
Dr. Monea Abdul-Majeed, Racial Justice Coordinator, YWCA of York - Dr. Abdul-Majeed has over 15 years of experience in organizational leadership, statistical analysis, training, project management, and professorship. She received her bachelor’s degree in sociology and politics from Washington and Lee University and her doctoral degree in Sociology and Political Science from Howard University, where her concentration was Social Inequality (Race, Gender, and Ethnicity) and Urban Sociology. Dr. Abdul-Majeed was a federal government employee at the U.S. Census Bureau from 2001-2016. During her tenure there, she worked in many different areas including Ancestry and Ethnicity, Workforce Development, Job Rotation, Organizational Climate, Poverty and Health Insurance Estimates, and Risk Management. She earned her Master’s Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau. While at the Census Bureau, Abudl-Majeed earned the Bronze Award, which is the highest award given, for her work on the Small Area Health Insurance Estimates and Small Area Poverty Estimates data collections. She also served as the Project Manager for the organization’s first organizational climate survey. She has been a professor at Montgomery Community College, Trinity Washington University, and HACC. She has taught Introduction to Sociology, The Family, Urban Sociology, Research Methodology, and Work and Society, and Research Writing.
Ruby Martin, M.Ed., Chief Child & Youth Program Officer, YWCA of York. With over 30 years of experience in early learning, Ruby has been overseeing the children and youth programs of YWCA York for over 13 years working with diverse populations. She has been training in PA since 1998 and currently holds her PQAS Certification for the 20th year. Ruby has attended multiple experiences to enhance her own learning about culture and inclusion, including Governors Institutes on Culturally Responsive Programming and Engagement, What’s Culture Go to do with it? The Importance of Understanding Diverse Populations, Supporting Cultural Competence Community of Practice through PA Key, and Bridges to Cultural Competency through YWCA Lancaster. During her first 10 years working with YWCA York, Ms. Martin led the Racial Justice work of the organization including the management of the Racial Justice Committee, film series and other community events around the topics of race and inclusion. Ruby also teaches several courses at HACC including Culture and Families and led a PA Statewide Training for PQAS instructors on how to incorporate inclusion and anti-bias work into every training they present. Ruby has led “Terry Casey Foundations Race Matters; Supporting Conversation about Race and Culture with Young Children” for more than 10 years and is versed in the implementation of Anti-Bias Education and Equity as a pedagogy since 1993. Currently the Chair of PACCA’s Board of Directors, Ruby is passionate about developing diverse communities in every level of leadership.
