Brief Description
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Associate Director for the Office of Institutional Research and Academic Planning (OIRAP). The Associate Director reports to the Director of Data Analytics and Management (Director) will be responsible for supervising a team of research analysts, as well as managing and overseeing institutional research related data reporting projects. The position performs professional work that requires specialized to general knowledge of the field of institutional research, and a solid understanding, use, and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, and terminology of this area of specialization.

Job Details
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Provides status reports to the Director.
• Supervises a team of research analysts and research project managers.
• Attends and participates in meetings, presentations, and discussions related to institutional research and data analysis.
• Manages institutional research workflow and provide status reports to the Director
• Develops and manages project plans and work plans for carrying out analyses of data.
• Provides technical advice to administrators and researchers.
• Creates reports, presentations, and publications based on the data analyses conducted.
• Presentations of research findings made to university administrators.
• Completes work independently with broadly defined work objectives and limited review of overall results.
• Develops and revises queries and reports to meet federal, state, and other reporting requirements.
• Contributes to the development, capture, and documentation of standardized approaches to responding to questions that are asked repeatedly.
• Collects and synthesizes a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative data from disparate internal and external sources to generate new, useful and actionable insights that influence decision making processes.
• Provides support for the Office’s data system operations.
• Acts as liaison between the Office and state and federal agencies
 
Job Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics, statistics, social science, or in a related scientific field or discipline.
• A minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of institutional research including data analysis, report development, data modeling, advanced analytics, using data to inform decision making, and experience in an analytical office, preferably within a higher education or other public sector setting.
 
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Robust knowledge of data management and data analysis tools, systems, and software; Proficiency in data querying (through GUI or writing and executing code against large relational databases) and cleaning; on the job experience with tools for reporting, statistical analysis and ad hoc requests; strong knowledge of data structures and ability to efficiently manipulate/query data.
• SAS skills (or similar advanced data management and statistical programming skills); experience using Tableau software; and well developed Microsoft Excel skills (i.e., pivot tables, cross tab queries, ODBC).
• Ability to flex between conceptual, big picture planning and detail-oriented research; excellent analytical, mathematical, and creative problem-solving skills, with keen attention to detail;
• Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy.
• Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with faculty and staff.
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives on data usage.
• Prior supervisory experience of fulltime staff.
• Excellent listening and Interpersonal skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical language and analyses to nontechnical audiences
 
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in applied mathematics, statistics, social science, or in a related scientific field or discipline.
• Seven (7) years of practical data analysis experience in an institutional research environment.
• A minimum of five (5) years at a four-year higher education institution.
• Experience with databases such as MS SQL and Oracle.
• A strong technical aptitude and desire to keep up with the latest technological and data management advances.
• Project management experience or abilities.
