Public lands under Trump likely to face 'copious litigation'

The second Trump administration’s federal lands agenda is widely expected to reverse the Biden administration's conservation efforts, moves environmental groups say they’ll litigate at every opportunity. Though President-elect Donald Trump disavowed the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, his new administration is expected to take cues from its approach to public lands and natural resources development.

After killing phragmites, native plants prove complicated to cultivate

Utah Ecologists are working to figure out how to help native plants grow quickly to prevent phragmites (Phragmites australis) from taking hold once again. A research team has experimental plots near the Great Salt Lake that have shown how mixes of native seeds can restore a wetland after phragmites has been removed.

31,000 acres at the front of a movement

The nonprofit Trust for Public Land is set to return 31,000 acres to Penobscot tribal management. It will be the largest return of its kind to an Indigenous tribe in U.S. history, without any easements or other restrictions. It’s a piece of a bigger shift in conservation thinking; rather than putting a premium on pristine and untouched wilderness, multiple environmental organizations are acknowledging that tribal stewardship benefits the land as well as Indigenous sovereignty.

Legal agreement requires California to propose regulations for pesticide-treated seeds

A group of environmental organizations informed a California state court that they reached an agreement with the California Department of Pesticide Regulation to propose regulations addressing pesticide-treated seeds. The 2023 lawsuit alleges that the department illegally adopted and maintained a policy that exempted crop seeds coated with pesticides — commonly referred to as “treated seeds” — from pesticide regulations.
