Restoration effort underway to reintroduce the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker (Dryobates borealis) in Tennessee

Tennessee aims to welcome the return of the Endangered Red-Cockaded Woodpecker, a species that hasn't been spotted in the state since 1994. State scientists recently identified one area as a potential habitat for the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker: the Savage Gulf Natural Area, a nearly 16,000-acre area between Murfreesboro and Chattanooga on the Cumberland Plateau.

NatureServe launches InSite by NatureServe, a next-generation biodiversity tool

As conversations about a nature-positive future push businesses and governments to move from commitment to action, InSite by NatureServe provides the data foundation to make that possible. By simply drawing on a map or uploading a site boundary, users receive feedback on how valuable an area is for nature, with nationally consistent, science-based information on species, ecosystems, and landscape condition.

American flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber) return to Florida: An ecological milestone

After more than a century, flamingos are making a remarkable return to Florida’s Everglades. A flock of 125 individuals was photographed in July 2025, a sight researchers partly attribute to Hurricane Idalia's winds, which relocated the birds to this area. Conservationists say that the flamingo's decision to remain in this region is a clear sign that the extensive restoration efforts in the Everglades are working.

Federal courts divided, so far, on Trump’s environmental retreat

In the 14 environmental policy cases so far in which there have been rulings on legal issues, the outcomes appear to be roughly even, with six clear wins for the Trump administration, five for the challengers, and three mixed decisions, according to an Inside Climate News analysis. The most important appellate panel, the Supreme Court, has yet to weigh in on any environmental cases from Trump’s second term.
