The Best Weekend in Cycling

The 25th annual BRAG Spring Tune-Up Ride will be April 26-28, 2019. Last year we had over 1,000 registered riders join us for the weekend!  Join us in 2019 and see what makes the Bicycle Ride Across Georgia so special.

For Spring TuneUp, riders travel at their own pace along a set route which includes rest stops with refreshments. You may choose to ride as many or as few miles as you like ranging from 20 - 100 miles. The start/finish will be at the same location all weekend. At the end of each day's ride, we camp at Sunflower Farm in Rutledge, Georgia where there will be food & drinks, hot showers, live music, and games. Some riders will choose to stay at local hotels.

Nestled in the Bavarian Alpine village of Helen, GA the ride starts in the heart of the North Georgia Mountains. After rolling out of Helen the route hits the first timed segment at mile 2.5, where any riders with intentions of an overall podium finish will need to put their cards on the table from the start. The first time section immediately enters the mountainous area made famous by the 2003-2008 Tour de Georgia. In 2008, Unicoi Gap was the second to last climb on the approach to the race-deciding ascent up Brasstown Bald where Kanstantin Suitsou got the jump on Trent Lowe and Levi Leipheimer to win the event. As riders tackle this timed section they cover over 7 miles and climb 1500ft to the top of Unicoi Gap. The climb is very gradual for several miles, before turning into a real alpine ascent. Enjoy the vistas of the Chattahoochee National Forest on the descent before turning left and climbing up and over Jack’s Gap.

A left turn on Richard Russell Scenic Hwy will put riders face to face with the 2nd timed section, Hogpen gap. Within 6.5 miles and another 1500ft, riders will reach the highest point on the course at 3469ft with ramps of 12%. The views at the top of the surrounding peaks are breathtaking. Check your speed and be careful on the descent as there are many sharp turns. Enjoy the ride through the forest knowing that the hardest riding is behind you.

After tackling the two biggest climbs of the day riders will head east from Helen through Unicoi State Park. The route then hits the 3rd timed section at mile 46, comprised of rolling terrain for a 4-mile section. Riders then get to enjoy a non-timed section of the route for the next 17 miles as the route explore the area round Lake Burton and Seed Lake. Be sure to save a bit of energy for the final time section, it only lasts just over 2 miles but at over 80 miles into the day you’ll need to find some go power.

The route finishes back into the landmark town of Helen where, in 1969, local business owners collaborated to create what is now called “Bavaria in the Appalachians.” Just outside of Helen on the route is the Nacoochee Indian Mound, the center of the ancient Cherokee town of Gauxule, visited by Desoto in his search for gold. Be sure to plan to stick around for beers, food and music served up at the finish line.

2019 Ypsilanti Ride Of Silence

Purpose: Silent ride to commemorate bicyclists killed or injured while riding and part of a world-wide event urging everyone, cyclists and motorists, to “share the road”.

Ride Location: Recreation Park - Rutherford Pool parking lot, Congress and Elm Streets. Link to map of ride starting point - https://goo.gl/maps/wD6oy9YKXPL2. The ride start has moved east near the pool as the pool is not yet open and parking is more available.

Ride Length: A little over 9 miles at a relaxed pace taking approximately one hour. Here is a map link -http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6596873. A limited supply of ride maps will be available at the start of the ride.  At some locations where a critical turn takes place, there will be a Ride Of Silence ‘road sign” or white arrow markings showing the route turn. The intent, however, is to ride as a group with a ride leader at the front and back of the group.

Feeling Tired?: If you feel you cannot complete the entire route, a good cut off point to return to the ride start point is when going east on Forest, to make a right turn on River Street to the next traffic signal south on Cross Street. Then follow the map route back to Recreation Park.

Showing Solidarity With Cyclists That Were Struck: Wear a black armband, or if you have been hit while riding, a red armband. Also the Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society will have a limited supply of clean “Ride Of Silence” jerseys that cyclists can borrow for the Ride (but must be returned at the end of the ride to use next year).

Before The Ride: Please make sure your bicycle is in good working order, including tires inflated to the proper value (tire pressures are stamped on the side of the tire).

Problems On The Ride: There will be “sweep” riders at the end of the Ride Of Silence riders group to assist riders with problems.

Cost: The ride is free.

Registration: No pre-registration. Just show up.

On The Ride: All participants are asked to wear a bicycle helmet and to obey all traffic laws, including stopping at all stop signs and traffic signals.  We are trying to set an example of the phrase “same roads, same rules! Also, the ROS is not a race and all intents the group is urged to stay together during the entire ride.

After The Ride: A post-ride gathering traditionally takes place at Arbor Brewing Ypsilanti (Corner Brewery), corner of Norris and Forest Streets. A map from Recreation Park to The Corner Brewery is here - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6596902

Sponsors: The Program To Educate All Cyclists (www.bikeprogram.org), Bike Ypsi (www.bikeypsi.org) and the Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society (www.aabts.org) .

The Bluegrass Cycling Club's Horsey Hundred is our club's favorite invitational. This 2-day event, based in Georgetown, Kentucky, takes place Memorial Day Weekend, this year on May 25th and 26th. It offers routes from 26 to 100 miles each day through the horse farm country north of Lexington. Every year about 60 Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society (AABTS) members make the 5-6-hour drive to see what other club members are raving about. Each year we are joined by several members of the Great Canadian Bicycle Tours (GCBT) bicycle club.

AABTS and GCBT is offering some special pre- and post-tour features again this year so you can make this a 2-, 3-, 4-, or even 5-day cycling vacation. Check the May AABTS Ride Calendar for more details.

The Spring Classic is always held on the third Saturday of June and is limited to 1,500 riders. It is a road bike event and is a timed challenge ride on the toughest terrain Michigan has to offer and will test you both mentally and physically. It is one of the most grueling and challenging rides you will ever participate in.  Four routes to choose from: a 50K teaser, a 100K metric century, a 160K, (100 mile century), and for those who dare… a 200K double metric with almost 10,000 feet of climbing!

This is a Bicycle Adventure Club ride. See the website: bicycleadventureclub.org

OVERVIEW:  Besides having some of the most stunning scenery in the country, the Southwest of Ireland is also renowned for its archaeological treasures and for the hospitality and warmth of its native population. There is an abundance of superb cycling routes. This is basically a repeat of the ride led by George Ellis in July, 2018.

Centered on the beautiful town of Killarney, the region encompasses five spectacular peninsulas, each with its own unique scenery and attractions. To the west of Killarney, the beauty of the Ring of Kerry coastline is legendary. To the south, Beara is another wonderfully rugged and beautiful peninsula stretching out into the Atlantic. Sheep’s Head, the smallest and least visited of the peninsulas, has a quiet charm all of its own. Further south Mizen Head at the extremity of the Mizen Peninsula is the most southerly point on the Irish mainland.

THE RIDES:  Starting in Killarney, we spend a loop day climbing the rugged and remote Gap of Dunloe and visiting Killarney National Park, Muckross House, and Ross Castle.  We then ride east to Gougane Barra, where we have the option to ride around Lough Allua, and then head south to meet the coast at Bantry.  Using this as a base for two nights, we explore remote Sheep’s Head, before following the coast north to the Beara Peninsula.  The spectacular Healey Pass takes us through the Caha Mountains to Kenmare for another two night stop, where we can enjoy the town’s famous musical pubs.  The Ring of Kerry occupies the next 3 days of riding, with the option to visit the UNESCO World Heritage monastery at Skellig Michael by boat or attend the Skellig Experience on the mainland.  The wonderful Dingle Peninsula is then explored, climbing Conor Pass, the highest mountain pass in Ireland, before the long descent and flat stretch into the colorful town of Tralee.
