Who Should Attend
Individuals from the field, foremen, superintendents, subcontractors, general contractors, and anyone new to the industry. It is also beneficial for those wanting to broaden their general understanding of the industry and the importance of safety.

This is one of 10 courses in our Construction Superintendent Certificate program (Super Cert). Super Cert courses are offered independent of one another, therefore registration for this class is open to all.

Program Description
This course provides an overview of construction documents and project manuals. Participants will read and interpret construction drawings and be able to recognize the types (components) of working drawings and specifications. They will identify the types of contracts used in the industry. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of ensuring documents are well- maintained.

Presenter
Steven McKinney is the Community Outreach and Resource Planning Specialist for the Northern New England District Office of the United States Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division. Steven originally started working for the Department of Labor in 2010 as a Wage and Hour Investigator. Over the next 6 years, he obtained direct experience enforcing the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Family Medical Leave Act, and other Federal labor laws. Prior to becoming an investigator, Steven worked as an attorney for the Law Offices of Ferris & Ferris in Chesterfield, Virginia. In his current role as a Community Outreach Specialist, Steven McKinney enjoys providing assistance to employers to help them understand how to comply with Federal labor laws.

Training Objectives

  • How to use and operate boom trucks safely in accordance with OSHA and industry standards, including:
  • Crane set-up and inspection
  • Load dynamics and safe operation
  • Lift planning and load charts
  • Recognize and avoid unsafe conditions associated with the operation of mobile cranes and movement of loads.
  • Reduce employer liability exposure through OSHA-required training and certification
Schedule 
All classes begin at 8:00 a.m.
  • Pre-work: NCCER Level One Mobile Crane Operator books will be mailed in advance
  • Monday: Signal and rigging basics
    • Homework: General knowledge practice tests
  • Tuesday: Review general knowledge tests, inspection and set-up basics
  • Wednesday: Practical training on the crane, further practice tests
  • Thursday: Lift planning and load chart problems
  • Friday: Classroom final review in the morning, followed by NCCER written exams at noon
  • Saturday or on a future date TBD: Practical exams scheduled onsite based on the readiness of the operator

Price includes:

Registration fee includes all books and materials, NCCER testing fees, one written exam re- take if needed (but not a practical exam re-take), crane rental for the practical training, and the practical exam on a date to be determined on your own boom truck or on a rental.

Instructor: Donald L. Olesen PE, CSP
Don has been in the practice of Environmental, Health and Safety for over 35 years. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology (Safety Engineering) with a minor in Communications from Illinois State University. He also has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with an advanced certificate in Human Resource Management from Southern New Hampshire University. Don is a Registered Professional Engineer and Certified Safety Professional in Engineering Practice.

Don has held several positions in the EHS field. He has progressed from a plant safety coordinator to Corporate Director of Safety to Senior Vice President of Loss Control. Don has been an adjunct faculty member at the Harvard University School of Public Health, Keene State College, and Antioch Graduate School.

Don has been a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers since 1982 when he was the Student Chapter Vice President. His roles in the ASSE include: Boston Chapter President, first New England Area Director, Delegate to the ASSE House of Dele- gates, Chapter Safety Professional of the Year, two time Regional Safety Professional of the Year and he currently serves as the New England Area Director (second term).

Working at a military facility?
You need to understand these requirements.

This course is designed for military facilities and site supervisors who must also serve as the competent person required by OSHA 1926.32(f), 1926.500, 1910, ANSI/ASSE Z359.2 and EM385-1-1 standards. Participants are assigned tasks which require evaluation for fall hazards. The tasks are described using reallife site photos. The training provides detailed coverage of the Fall Prevention & Protection Supervisor Training course materials and program topics. The course also supplies the participant with the knowledge and skills to perform the annual inspection and record keeping.
