Profile:
Wayne Neilson (b. 1966) is a Tasmanian based freelance Composer, Orchestrator, Arranger. He studied composition at the NSW State Conservatorium of Music (Newcastle Campus) graduating with Distinction under the supervision of Nigel Butterley (1935-2022). In 1988, Wayne worked closely with Nigel as engraver for his Opera 'Lawrence Hargrave Flying Alone'. In 1989, he composed 'Nexus 1' for the Seymour Group 2MBS FM Young Composers Workshop. The work features flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and percussion ensemble writing. His first song cycle 'Of Fire and Ice' was premiered in 1990 by Sarah Louise Owens and Nigel Butterley at the Canberra School of Music.
In 2019, his orchestral work 'From Valley to Summit' won the Tasmanian Orchestra (TSO) 2019 Heyward Prize for Orchestral Composition. The work was given its world premiere at Symphony Under the Stars in Launceston in February 2020. In 2021 the work was recorded by TSO/ABC at the Hobart ABC recording Studio in Federation Concert Hall Hobart.
In 2022, two movements from his String Quartet 'Anima' were selected as part of Flinders Quartet Ascend Composer development program. The work was performed and recorded that same year by the Quartet. His other recent works include a Wind Quintet 'Pandemos' compose during the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic, a choral work with environmental messages for SSAATTBB called 'Listen to the Wind' and a commission for a 15 minute work titled 'Memories of Carrowkeel'. Wayne is currently working on a sonata for flute and piano and a set of miniatures for flute, clarinet and prepared piano. Wayne recently completed a six month Artist Mentoring Residency 'Catapult' with Katy Abbott.
Wayne currently plays flute/piccolo with the Huon Valley Concert Band. He is a represented artist with the Australian Music Centre (AMC) as well as having his works published.
