Diplomates of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) have received the highest credential a dentist can earn in dental sleep medicine. To earn this qualification, dentists are required to demonstrate competency in dental sleep medicine and must pass a rigorous written examination. Dental sleep medicine is not recognized as a specialty area by the American Dental Association.
AADSM Dental Sleep Medicine Facility Accreditation is a voluntary process that recognizes competency and delivery of optimal care to patients who seek treatment for sleep-disordered breathing with an oral appliance. To become accredited by the AADSM, facilities must comply with the AADSM Standards for Accreditation, the gold standard for patient care in dental sleep medicine. Dental sleep medicine is not recognized as a specialty area by the American Dental Association.
A qualified dentist is an AADSM member who has a valid state dental license, professional liability coverage and at least 25 hours of recognized continuing education in dental sleep medicine provided by a dental sleep medicine focused non-profit organization or accredited dental school in the last two years.
