Brown Bag WEBINAR #11 - Make Your Briefs More Persuasive
11/18/2020 - 11/18/2020
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Event Description
Although written briefs are the core of advocacy both in the trial court and on appeal, judges—family law judges included—consistently complain about the quality of the briefs and memoranda they see. Arguments are often dense and disorganized—far from persuasive. In this webinar, two certified appellate specialists—Honey Kessler Amado and Gregory R. Ellis—each of whom has many years of briefing experience, suggest ways to make legal writing more focused, more compelling, and more interesting to read—in effect, more persuasive. Topics include deep reading of cases, strategic and tactical considerations concerning facts and argumentation, distinguishing between forums, matters of style and presentation, and processes for getting words on the blank page.

Honey Kessler Amado consults on issues anticipated for appeal and presents writing workshops and coaching in legal writing. Certified as a specialist in appellate law by the State Bar of California’s Board of Legal Specialization since 1997, Honey has over 30 published opinions and is a frequent writer and speaker on legal issues, including legal writing. Greg Ellis has also been certified as an appellate specialist by the Board of Legal Specialization since 1997, having limited his practice to appellate law since 1987. His current firm, the Law Offices of Gregory R. Ellis, handles civil appeals, writs, and related trial court services, and primarily focuses on family law matters. Greg frequently lectures and writes articles on appellate-related issues, including brief writing.
