LIVE Webinar - Central Auditory Processing Disorder: Focusing on the Correct Diagnosis, Not the Easy One

Course Description:
This presentation will begin by defining central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) and discussing the causes and conditions leading to its diagnosis for a pediatric population. Focus will be placed on neuromaturational, neurological, and neuromorphological causes and characteristics. Co-morbid conditions will be described, and links between literacy and listening will be discussed. The appropriateness of patient characteristics for referral and testing purposes will be described and supported by findings in the literature. Testing protocols, including behavioral and electrophysiological measures, will be discussed and debated. New recommendations for adding manual dexterity or motoric measures to the evaluation, as well as recommendations for changes to current AAA and ASHA guidelines, will be a focus of this presentation. Information regarding insurance coverage, evaluation costs, and availability of testing in Kansas will be provided, when possible. The primary focus of this presentation will be the correct identification of children needing an auditory processing evaluation and how to go about the process.
Learning Objectives:
Following this session,
1. Participants will be able to define central auditory processing disorder, describe its characteristics, and list etiologies specific to children and adolescents.
2. Participants will be able to discuss a variety of behavioral/subjective and electrophysiological/objective CAP testing techniques for children and adolescents.
3. Participants will be able to describe recent recommendations for changes to the testing protocols and guidelines for diagnoses of central auditory processing.
4. Participants will be able to explain the importance of an audiologist’s thorough knowledge of auditory processing, the understanding of appropriate test measures, and the value of a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis of CAPD.
