Keynote address: Evolution of Biological Nutrient Removal, by Leon Downing
Biological nutrient removal (BNR) configurations have been implemented since the 1970s for biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal. As our understanding of the processes involved in BNR has grown, the approach to design and operation has evolved. This presentation will discuss how historic design and operating criteria were developed, and provide the audience with a summary of where future design criteria are moving in terms of fermentative processes, dissolved oxygen setpoints, settleability control, and reactor configurations.
Design Flexibility and Operations Workshops Improve Biological Phosphorus Removal Performance, by Troy Larson
o The presentation will highlight the successful commissioning of a biological nutrient removal system in Illinois and how each control parameter was “reimagined” for the new process goals following equipment commissioning. Each fundamental process control will be described with an explanation of how and why adjustments were made from the historical targets prior to adding BPR to the secondary treatment system. Data that illustrates the effectiveness of the moves will be shown.
Biological Nutrient Removal, City of Streator Wastewater Facility, by Greg Garbs and Don Bixby
The presentation will describe the modification of the existing nitrification facility to accommodate nutrient removal. The facility initiated several operational changes, with the inclusion of chemical addition, to achieve State required nitrogen and phosphorus discharge limits.
