Development and Deployment of Machine Learning/AI Tools for Nutrient Removal

Event Description
Managing biological nutrient removal processes can be challenging for even the most experienced operators. Data-driven decision-making can improve management of processes such as enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR), but roadmaps on how to get from data collection to deploying real-time tools have not been well established in the industry. Here the development and deployment of FABIO, an intelligent operational tool designed for wastewater treatment operators to assist day-to-day decision making for improved stability of EBPR, is discussed. This includes the development of machine-learning based process models, optimization AI, training modules, and a framework for supporting the required maintenance and monitoring of data-driven ‘digital daughter’ applications across utilities.
