Contaminants of Emerging Concern: Impacts, Sources, and Remediation Potential
6/7/2022
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Event Description
Description: Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), also known as emerging contaminants, are chemicals and other materials that have been found in the environment, but whose risk to both aquatic life and people is not fully understood or regulated. This group, which includes substances like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (like PFAS, PFOA and GenX), pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and microplastics, are increasingly causing concern due to their presence in both municipal water supplies and natural waters. This talk will provide an overview of these noteworthy CECs and their impacts, sources, and potential for remediation. An update on new efforts by legislators and regulators in Illinois to address CECs will also be provided.
