Audiological Evaluations on Difficult-to-Test Patients
8/26/2022
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM CST

Event Description
Friday, August 26, 2022
Noon- 1pm
Via Zoom

As Audiologists, we have to get creative sometimes when testing certain patients. For patients who can't (or won't) push the button every time they hear the tone, what do you do? How can you get an accurate, ear-specific audiological evaluation on a patient who has complex medical issues, vision impairment, autism, sensory issues, dementia, developmental delays, or a language barrier? What strategies can you use to get a behavioral response at threshold? Which frequencies are most important to get an accurate threshold for? What about speech testing? In this session, the Audiology team at Ascension Via Christi Hospital will share their tips and tricks for testing these populations.

Learning Objectives:
1) The participant will be able to list several types of difficult-to-test patients.
2) The participant will be able to describe three ways to get behavioral responses to puretone stimuli.
3) The participant will be able to recommend next steps when behavioral testing is not possible or inconclusive.

Topic Outline:
1) Population of difficult-to-test patients
2) 'Making friends' before testing
3) Keeping quiet for OAEs & Tympanograms
