Electrical FAQ, Episode II (More Questions Other People Asked – So You Don’t Have To!)
Travis Moore, PE, Building Engineering Services Manager, HDR Engineering, Inc.
At times, the electrical systems found in wastewater and water treatment facilities may seem shrouded in mystery. You know electricity is necessary to make the machinery and treatment processes in your facility work their magic – but what’s in all those gray boxes, anyway, and how does it all work?
This session will demystify at least a few questions that are commonly asked about those mysterious gray boxes and their inner workings, such as: What are some power distribution systems designs that are common in water and wastewater? Why is my electrical room so big/small? Why is my [major electrical gear] only running at 20% of its capacity? The audience gets to choose from a range of topics and open dialogue is encouraged!

9:15 – 10:15 am
IFAS – Could it be the Right Technology for Your BNR Treatment Needs?
Brian Knadle, Wastewater Manager, Burns & McDonnell
Greg Woodward, Wastewater Project Manager, Burns & McDonnell
Is integrated fixed film activated sludge (IFAS) still considered innovative? The presentation will focus on the technology, its’ advantages, disadvantages, and successful projects that have been designed, built, and operated across the country.

Pretreatment: Basics & Industry Innovations
Sheri Duren, Industrial Pretreatment Supervisor, City of Boulder
The world of pretreatment is held together by the basics found in federal code but it’s the innovations that keep us coming back.  We’ll discuss the minimums of a pretreatment program and then we will delve into some of the innovations that make pretreatment fun.

11:30 am – 12:30 pm
Critters and Their Growth Environments
Ron Schuyler, Owner, COWAC
Immerse yourself in the activated sludge process at the microbial level. DNA testing continues to reveal discoveries that will lead to a better operational understanding of what’s happening in the anaerobic / anoxic selectors and aeration tanks.

Operator Involvement: Keeping Avon WWTF Running Through 2.5 Years of Construction
Jeff Berlin, PE, Vice President, Carollo Engineers
Tim Drescher, Avon WWTF Supervisor, Eagle River Water & Sanitation District
Construction comes to every facility – new regulations, growth, and asset replacement. Maintaining compliance during construction requires detailed planning and sequencing of the work to maintain treatment capacity in service, minimize temporary costs, and provide a feasible construction approach. The 4.3 MGD Avon WWTF is just wrapping up 2.5 years of significant construction affecting almost every single process. The presentation will review key project components, construction sequence for units out of service, and a walk through of the crucial role of operations staff in the planning and execution of the work.
2:15 – 3:15 pm
Design Options for PFAS Treatment Systems: Examples from Installations Across the USA
Kelsey Hakes, Business Development Engineer, Aqueous Vets
Granular activated carbon (GAC) and ion exchange (IX) resin are currently the most economical treatment solutions for PFAS compound removal. Understanding the differences between the medias and best practices that follow the four tenets of pressure vessel design for your site is important in making a treatment decision. This workshop will discuss mechanical design differences, operational differences, media RSSCT/Pilot data, and case studies for both medias.  We will also touch on the new media CETCO Flouro-sorb that has shown promising results when compared to GAC and IX Resin.
