APSAC Round Tables are opportunities for an informal, 60-minute discussion on a specific topic relevant to child maltreatment facilitated by an expert in the field. These special small group discussions are available only to members and participation is limited to 25, first come first serve. A second Roundtable on a particular topic may be scheduled if interest significantly exceeds capacity. ​


Presenter Bio: 

Dr. Hanson is a Licensed Psychologist, and Professor at the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center (NCVRTC), in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and in the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina. She is Associate Director of Research and Director of the Family and Child Program at the NCVRTC. She is also serving as Director of the Training and Technical Assistance Division of the National Mass Violence Victimization Resource Center (NMVVRC), funded by the Office for Victims of Crime and Department of Justice. Throughout her career, Dr. Hanson has focused on understanding and responding to victims of traumatic events, as well as training professionals to provide effective treatments for children and families. Her research has been funded by federal agencies, such as National Institute of Mental Health, Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration, and the Office for Victims of Crime, as well as private foundations. Dr. Hanson is a clinical supervisor at the NCVRTC. She also co-directs an integrated behavioral health program in pediatric primary care, and she provides clinical supervision. Dr. Hanson is a national TF-CBT master trainer. 
 

Round Table Description: 

The purpose of this round table is to generate discussion on the myriad terms used to describe a traumatic event. This will include how to differentiate between an event that meets DSM-5 criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder, versus stressful life events, along with implications for treatment, policy and training across multidisciplinary child abuse professionals.
