CHLA/ABSC Webinar - Transforming your Conference Presentation into a Journal Article
7/7/2021 - 7/7/2021

Event Description
Session Description:

In many disciplines, most conference presentations end when the conference does: they do not go on to become peer-reviewed articles. Yet there is also research to suggest that continuing to work with a conference paper / presentation to turn it into an article leads to higher research productivity overall, with additional benefits of increasing a researcher's confidence, motivation, and capacity for further research. Beyond simply a lack of time, there are other barriers that prevent researchers from taking this next step. In particular, the structure, tone, use of evidence, audience, and scholarly goals can differ significantly between conference papers/presentations and peer-reviewed articles. Articulating these differences is not only a first step in the editing process; it can also be used as a basis for constructing a step-by-step plan and timeline for creating the article from the conference paper/presentation. Synthesizing multidisciplinary scholarship on academic writing, resources from academic writing coaches, and case studies, this session is a practical discussion focusing on concrete strategies for addressing major barriers in the conference paper/presentation to article editing process.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Be able to identify solutions to common barriers to developing a journal article from a conference paper/presentation
  2. Evaluate and compare goals and audiences for a conference paper/presentation vs. a journal article, and use these differences to identify necessary edits
  3. Create an individual editing plan and timeline for a paper in progress
