Course Introduction:
The Minnesota Subcontractors Association (MSA) has been advocating for subcontractors since its inception in 1991. In keeping with its mission, the MSA has developed this Minnesota Subcontractors Association’s Construction Contract Course. Though not a legal reference, along with associated education classes this course provides a comprehensive guide for Minnesota subcontractors preparing to review, negotiate and manage construction contracts.
Subcontractors are the backbone and lifeblood of the construction industry. When you look at a construction project in progress, you are typically looking at subcontractors at work. Subcontractors provide the materials and perform 90 percent or more of the minor and major tasks required to take a project from groundbreaking to ribbon cutting. They enable contractors (the party subcontractors contract with) to bid projects knowing that the “Subs” they engage will take their project to a successful completion.
Subcontracting firms come in all shapes and sizes. Most have developed from their principal’s hands-on trade experience, and are usually among the best in their field. However, coming from a trade background, most subcontractors need, or at least can benefit from guidance with the financial, business administration and legal aspects of running a business. In particular, legal issues come up with great frequency, since construction contracts are the basis of almost every job. This course was created to help experienced subcontractors hone their contracting skills, and to help new or less experienced subcontractors understand construction contracts.
What you get with the course:
  • The MSA Contract Course Workbook
  • 16 hours of classroom discussion
  • Industry professionals teaching each session
  • Open book exam at the end
