Description: The Metro Wastewater Reclamation District’s Robert W. Hite Facility treats an average of 135 million gallons of municipal wastewater in the Denver metropolitan area, and is currently investigating process intensification as a means to produce higher quality effluent, and address capacity and real‐estate limitations. The recycle centrate flow from dewatering accounts for only 1% of the Hite Facility’s total flow, yet accounts for 25% of the total ammonia load on the mainstream. Back in 2012, the District piloted an Anita Mox™ moving bed biofilm reactor as a side‐stream treatment for the high ammonia centrate. The results of the pilot showed that this single process could eliminate up to 70% of nitrogen in the centrate in 30% of the volume that would otherwise be required to treat the ammonia in the mainstream process. These results convinced the District to move forward with construction of a 1 million gallon Anita Mox™ reactor. Commencement and startup occurred in 2017, and now successfully handles the entirety of the recycle centrate stream. Come visit the Hite Facility to see the technology in action, and to hear the conclusions and lessons learned through the startup and continued operation of the largest side‐stream Anita Mox™ reactor in the world.
