This month’s presentation will be a “tag-team” by Charlie Liu, Carolyn Coffey and Kate Newhart. Charlie, Carolyn, and Kate are all PhD students at the Colorado School of Mines in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department, each representing a major water/wastewater treatment research lab on campus.
Charlie Liu will be discussing per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) treatment in groundwater including a brief overview on PFASs, treatment technologies currently used and researched, and results from pilot scale case studies with granular activated carbon (GAC) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes in contaminated and spiked waters. Carolyn Coffey will present her work on energy-positive, anaerobic treatment of municipal wastewater including how anaerobic organic removal with simultaneous partial-nitritation anammox (PN/A) can be achieved in a pilot-scale primary/secondary anaerobic reactor for energy generation. Kate Newhart will discuss the use of big data in municipal wastewater including a case study of statistical process control to detect treatment faults in a sequencing batch membrane bioreactor.
