JTAC Presentation

Biological Nutrient Removal 101

Thursday, May 18th, 2017

Description:

Many wastewater treatment facilities are being faced with treatment requirements for nitrogen, phosphorus, and even selenium, and the number increases every year. Generally, the most cost effective approach for treating these contaminants is through biological processes. This presentation will address the basics of biological nutrient removal processes and their incorporation into wastewater treatment facilities. In part, the presentation is intended for those who may not need to be “experts” in treating wastewater to remove nutrients, yet would benefit from an understanding of how the processes work (e.g., utilities managers). In addition, this presentation will be of value for recent graduating engineers who learned the theory during school, but would like to get a better “feel” for biological nutrient removal. It will also be beneficial for operators who run one of these systems and would like a better understanding of how and why they do what they do.

Speaker:

Steve Polson, P.E., Chair of JTAC. Steve is a senior water and wastewater engineer with CH2M. His practical experience with biological nutrient removal began in the early 1990’s, when he served as a co-author for the book “Phosphorous and Nitrogen Removal from Municipal Wastewater, Principles and Practice”, along with Daigger, Jenkins, Eckenfelder, Barnard, and Stensel, among others, published in 1991. Since that time he has presented on the topic in training sessions for operators (Leadville, Englewood), and he received (along with Glen Daigger and Terry Anderson) the Philip F. Morgan Medal from the Water Environment Federation in 1996 for developing a unique operational approach to improving biological phosphorous removal at a wastewater treatment plant in Colorado.

Directions:

The luncheon will be held at AWWA at 6666 W. Quincy Ave, Denver. From Hwy 285 (W. Hampden Ave) exit Sheridan Blvd. Turn right onto W.
