Port Huron Celebrates Completion of Two New Public Art Murals Downtown
Murals highlight the city's history, waterfront identity, and commitment to creative placemaking
PORT HURON, MI – The City of Port Huron is proud to announce the completion of two new public art murals that add bold color, creativity, and community pride to the downtown district. Created by local and Michigan-based artists, both pieces mark significant milestones in the city’s growing public art initiative.
“Under the Blue” Unveiled on the 7th Street Bridge
The mural “Under the Blue,” created by Port Huron artist Steve Nordgren, transforms the 7th Street Bridge with a dynamic celebration of Port Huron’s waterfront identity. The artwork adds a lively splash of color and creativity to the city’s landscape.
Nordgren, who also completed a mural at Active Lounge in 2023, shared, “I had a lot of fun with this project, and a lot of eyes watching as I worked, wondering what was taking shape.”
City Manager James Freed praised the work, stating, “Public art is a reflection of who we are as a community. Steve beautifully captured that along the 7th Street Bridge walkway. Public art is a powerful example of how art can connect people to place.”
The City invites residents and visitors to experience “Under the Blue” along the 7th Street Bridge walkway.
“Postcards from Port Huron” Completed on Alpine Cycles Building
A second mural, “Postcards from Port Huron,” created by Michigan artist Kevin Burdick, now adorns the Alpine Cycles building. The striking piece highlights Port Huron’s history, waterfront character, and iconic landmarks, including the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, the Huron Lightship, the Blue Water Bridge, McMorran Place, and a classic Port Huron postcard motif floating across a rippling water surface.
The completed mural represents another milestone in Downtown Port Huron's growing public art initiative. The program is led by the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and supported in part by the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County (EDA) and funded with Regional Prosperity Funds from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).
“This mural unveiling is more than the addition of color to a wall, it’s the celebration of our community’s spirit, creativity, and shared identity,” said City Manager James Freed. “Public art has the power to transform ordinary spaces into meaningful places that tell the story of who we are and what we value.”
Special appreciation is extended to Alpine Cycles owner Kurt Eppley for offering the prominent building façade and supporting the advancement of public art downtown.
Together, these two murals continue to strengthen Port Huron’s sense of place and showcase the unique character that makes the city a radiant place to live, work, and visit.
