MARLETTE, Mich. — The Marlette Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is proud to announce the completion of the Michigan Agriculture Commodities Mural, a vibrant new public art installation celebrating the agricultural heritage that has shaped the Marlette community for generations.
The large-scale mural, measuring approximately 55 feet by 75 feet, now serves as a striking landmark in downtown Marlette and reflects the community's deep connection to Michigan agriculture. The artwork honors the people, families, and traditions that continue to make agriculture one of the region's most important industries. Created by acclaimed mural artist Kevin Burdick, owner of Art Scrapes, the mural was designed to illustrate the theme of "generation farming"—the passing of agricultural knowledge, stewardship, and hard work from one generation to the next. Upon completing the project, Burdick shared his thoughts and completed photos on social media:
"Just wrapped up this beast of a wall in #MarletteMichigan for the Downtown Development Authority, 55' x 75'. Tried to capture 'generation farming', in one simple image. Simple but powerful! One of my biggest challenges yet!"
"The Michigan Agriculture Commodities Mural is more than a beautiful work of art—it is a tribute to the farmers, families, and agricultural businesses that have long been the backbone of our local economy," said Christine Malzahn, City Manager. "This mural celebrates the values that have shaped Marlette for generations and creates a lasting visual reminder of the important role agriculture continues to play in our community. Public art not only beautifies our downtown but also creates a sense of place, encourages visitors to stop and explore, and strengthens community pride."
The mural is part of the Marlette DDA's ongoing commitment to downtown revitalization through placemaking initiatives that enhance the community's identity, support local businesses, and create welcoming public spaces. By investing in projects that celebrate Marlette's unique history and culture, the DDA continues to build a vibrant downtown for residents and visitors alike.
The Marlette Downtown Development Authority extends its appreciation to Kevin Burdick of Art Scrapes for his exceptional talent and vision, as well as to the many community partners and supporters who helped make this project possible.
The DDA, together with the MAC team is currently planning an official ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Michigan Agriculture Commodities Mural. The event will be announced at a later date, and community members, project partners, and supporters will be invited to join in recognizing this exciting addition to downtown Marlette.
