The City of Joliet is the third largest city in the state of Illinois and home to over 150,000 residents. Joliet sits 35 miles southwest of Chicago and is easily accessible by auto, train and bus; making it the perfect place to live, work and play.

The Department of Public Utilities owns and operates both water and wastewater systems providing all four key water and wastewater services: wastewater collection and treatment and water treatment and distribution. The service area covers over 40 square miles, across two counties and serves the City’s residents in addition to satellite districts and towns. Our infrastructure includes 670 miles of water main, 598 miles of sewer main, 50 lift stations, 3 wastewater treatment plants, 26 wells, 11 drinking water plants for radium removal, 6 water pumping stations, 5 elevated tanks, 2 standpipes and 3 underground storage tanks. On a daily basis we treat 25 million gallons of wastewater and distribute 19 million gallons of drinking water. The department includes a staff of approximately 80 and has an annual operating budget of $60 million.

The Public Utilities Department has several scopes of internships available including:

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee
Addison, IL

The Human Resources Department of the Village of Addison is accepting applications to fill one at-will, non-exempt, full-time position of Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee in the Public Works Department/Division of Water Pollution Control. The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee works 40 hours a week, 7:00am – 3:30pm, Monday – Friday. May be required to work weekends, holidays and overtime to complete job requirements, as well as be on 24-hour call when necessary. Under direct supervision this person performs a wide variety of beginning level, manual tasks, in a training situation, involving the operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment building and grounds, tools, and equipment. Work follows a scheduled program to ensure continued plant efficiency and conformance. The Trainee will be required to successfully obtain a Class 4 I.E.P.A Operator’s Certificate of Competency within eighteen (18) months of start date in order to remain employed with the Village of Addison. However, successfully obtaining the required Class 4 I.E.P.A Operator’s Certificate, does not guarantee continued employment in this position.

Public Works Analyst - Environmental and Safety Programs
